I've done some tests searching the best configuration of my PC based daw. I've found a stable configuration using winxp.
Before the tweaking I experimented some midi stucking notes and some loss notes (caused by some missing note on/note off messages:
I've discovered that the board miss them in certain -unsure- conditions).
About the midi issues I've noticed that I loose more messages when the harddisk is writing, so i suppose something realated to the mainboard or the os.
I've done a lot of tests and reinstallations and I've noticed the following behaviours:
- Win98 is faster in graphic than other OSs.
(a lot faster in my pc: I've opened 10 masterverbs and the stm16-32 and i could drag the windows one over the other with a nice framerate)
- win98 does not support newer sequencers
- Win 2000/xp without service pack does not support harddrive larger than 120 Gb
- With Win 2000 in standard pc mode I've resolved all the IRQ conficts. I tought I've resolved the midi issues also, BUT Sometimes
(not very often really) Some midi off or some midi on messages were lost.
I've resolved the midi issues installing an old soundblaster live. When I need it I start the utility "midiloopback" and in the routing window I load the sequencer midi source.
A nice "add'on" is the emu sampler. I've setted the live as standard midi devices, so I can use a general midi soundfont, which is very handy for fast listening of midi files and to save some DSPs if I need a very simple soundfont player.
Another nice, but not reliable, addition is the possibility to record 3 midi channels at the same time (via merging them inside the routing window)
Actually I run Scope 4.5 under winxpro and my actual configurarion is:
PC with ASUS CUSL2C motherboard and PentiumIII 800MHz CPU, 512Mb Ram (not ddr). Graphic board matrox G450 DualHead (16 MBRam). Hd matrox 80Gb 7200RPM + matrox 200Gb 7200RPM. Pulsar + Pulsar2 + Creative SBLive value. DVDwriter samsung +/- R,Rw etc...
