Semi-Advanced Midi Questions...

Hello All. I recently upgraded my studio with some much needed hardware. I purchased an M-Audio Midisport 4x4 interface, and an access virus B.
My questions are... First off... is it better to plug my midi keyboard into the 4x4, or through my USB port? The second, is, how do I avoid midi loops? Maybe it is just my juno, cause it's old, and none of the other synths have done it thus far... but when i first plugged it all in, I would assign the midi in on midi trk 1 in cubase to my keyboard, and the midi out to the juno, record some midi notes, then assign the midi in to the juno so I can filter sweep etc from the PG 300 controller. Well, when I did this, it seems more than just the notes I recorded would play, or maybe the notes aren't ending, so they all bleed together? I am not sure what happened. The first thought I had was that local was on, but I couldn't find anything to turn local off?
So, I don't understand midi loops... could someone maybe clarify this a little for me? Is it possible I am getting loops with my setup?

wow, that's a lot of questions. i only have time to answer one or two right now. use midi not usb. it's faster. of course if your midi input is a usb device, then the usb direvct input might be better. see which "feels" better....a midi loop is formed when a device throughputs data instead of transmitting only new data back to the source it came from(so it's most likely to happen on a device that uses midi out as a thru port...). buffers fill fast that way leading to a lock up. it sounds like the juno is doing this, but i doubt it. it might be interesting to bring the juno's midi in through scope, in order to use a midi monitor and see what messages are being transmitted. it's possible the pg300 won't function that way. this is a juno alpha? i'm pretty sure that has a local control. i don't think that it should have any effect on your problem.
if you don't use the controller does it work properly? are there other midi tracks that might transmit out the same port on the same midi channel?

In cubase the midi thru funtion is to avoid midi loops with older material it's basically because the midi thru was concieved differently it happens if you plug a midi device in using the in and the out.you play a note,it goes into the sequencer which sends it onto the keyboard that you played the note on.So basically, yes it's a pain in the arse.To use the patches under cubase you need a text file which goes in the steinberg documents and settings folder for your virus it goes in scripts/patchnames it's called a patchnames script. You put your virus patchname script in this folder and you use the midi device manager in sx3.

Funnily enough the patchname script is actually ON THE ACCESS WEBSITE,or HERE.

I'm actually asking, not expressing sarcasm. Didn't realize it read as such until I reread (just now). Meaning, if you wanted it to reflect any changes you made to the banks, you'd have to edit the file somehow? I tend to use front panel editing for many of those tasks, and do bulk dumps of presets & programs/multi's from my hardware synths per project. I also don't have many of the stock Virus presets anymore so it makes a difference for me....
To be fair my Nuendo 1.6 license sits unused as I spend my time in the aging but still useful 5.51 version of Logic. I use Sounddiver which makes updating local patch & program info easy, but I really don't bother to do patch changes or the like from within Logic. I use Sounddiver mainly to load & backup programs & multi's, as well as to speed up sound design & patch creation.
I recall that Steinberg had hinted that they might do a Sounddiver type app of their own, built on top of the Yamaha Studio Manager 2 backend they use for the midi subsystem in SX3 & Nuendo3.
