Hip-hop gets a bad press. And if you regard the wack s**t that gets in the charts as hip-hop, perhaps deservedly so.

If you want to check out some real hip-hop, listen to these albums/artists. These are all absolute classics and ground-breaking in their own ways. There are many many more and I will post them when I have time to sit down and remember them all. But these are a good starting point (and in no particular order):

Pete Rock - pretty much anything
Organized Konfusion - Stress: The Extinction Agenda
De La Soul - Stakes is High
De La Soul - Buhloone Mindstate
De La Soul - Three Feet High and Rising
A Tribe Called Quest - pretty much anything
Ultramagnetic MCs - pretty much anything
The Cenobites (Kool Keith/Godfather Don) - The Cenobites
Dr Octogon - Ecologyst
Dr Dooom - First Come First Served
EPMD - pretty much anything
Common - Like Water For Chocolate
Slum Village - Fantastic Vol.1
Slum Village - Fantastic Vol.2
Gang Starr - Hard to Earn
Gang Starr - Moment of Truth
The Roots - Do You Want More?!
The Roots - Illadelph Halflife
The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde
The Pharcyde - Labcabincalifornia
DJ Premier - New York Reality Check
Boogie Down Productions - Criminal Minded
Boogie Down Productions - Live Hardcore Worldwide
MF Doom - operation doomsday
MF Doom - Mm.. Food
MF Doom is Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain
Company Flow - Funcrusher Plus
Bigg Jus - Black Mamba Serums
Nephlim Modulation Systems - Woe To Thee Oh Nation Whose King Is A Child
Wu Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
OC - Word Life
Lootpack - Soundpieces: Da Antidote
Quasimoto - The Unseen
Madlib - Shades of Blue

Incidentally, I think it would be cool to start topics like this for other genres

If its in the charts, chances are its either "Rap" or Pop masquerading as hiphop (trying to bite some style).

nice list mate

at first i didnt see tribe called questn and since its one of my fav hip hop acts i was kinda dissapointed, but hey, i should read more carefully
a few other acts worth mentioning are (sorry for not mentioning albums):

DJ Shadow
DJ Krush
Q-bert

as we all know, hip hop is more than one element. These ones brought "turntableism" to my ears. I think i got my first DJ Shadow album 13 years ago and it is still my favourite album. Samples a lot.

DJ Krush has always inspired me with his unique blend. He brings Asia much closer to me personally. His unique blend of classic beats and "asian sound" blended with Jazz has always intrigued me.

5 years ago i sat 5 meters from his turntables in a deeeeeeep sofa while he played a 2 hour set. ive never been so facinated, cool calm and collected in my life

Worth a listen for everybody i guess

Excellent list & the idea of starting them for other genres is cool too. What next though? reggae & Dub? Maybe they should have came first?

Do you think stick to electronic?

I've got a couple you could add to this list, but there's more somewhere in my mind, so I'll hold off

Q-bert is obviously peerless... actually if you want to hear him at his best, check out the Dr Octogon album. My favourite execution of scratching on anything, ever - fits perfectly into the context of the production and lyrics.. simply jaw-dropping at times.

Krush is good but a bit too chilled out for my liking, Shadow too has amazing technical skillz but musically not my cup of tea personally.

Anyway it's great that people are adding recommendations - this was the intention of the thread!

As for future threads for other genres, bring em on - don't ask, just do it!

Great idea Darkrezin!

Personally I'm a big shadow fan, and the rest of the Quannum crew are also worth checking - especially Gift of the Gab (mc) and Blackalicious.
While Qbert is peerless for invention (crab etc...) - djs Craze and A-trak are pretty mad on the decks as well as dj Flare (yes the inventor of the flare scratch). i'm also a big fan of kid koala who does some wierd and wonderful things as well - There is a tune, i forget the name, where he does a trumpet solo for just one sample on the decks - has to be heard to be believed!
On the Brit side of things Roots Manuva are the obvious choice, along with Phi-Life-Cypher, Mark B and Blade, Rodney P and Skitz, and a whole load that i can't think of right now!

An old favourite is '93 till Infinity by Souls of Mischief. It probably has a place alongside De La & the Pharcyde in any list  Info on their other albums here at hieroglyphics

There's more in this thick skull somewhere.

first off; Souls of Mischief!

a FANTASTIC live performance at a small (max 200 ppl- venue)

secondly, fuckin DJ PREMIER showed up! and he played a 3 hour set!
