Whew,
just finished this project, together with a great danish artist, last night...and I'm quite happy with it...even enough to share it here. I should say that the sound on the film is compressed and not in full quality.
It's about a girl which portraits the human evolution from animal, animal instincs and innosense to selfconscience over to selfdestruction and sin.
The basic idea is to have an ironic attitude to the fact that when human became selfconscience, the innosense vanished. How the selfdestuction of human, is made as a part of our belief.
I made all sound on the film, including the sounds of when she is animal, which is infact foxes making love...hehe
All other sounds is from various synths, mostly creamware one and a little samples...I'm especially glad for the scene where she screams, this is minimax, with some extreme distortion, and playing with filter/resonance.
For the composing work, ofcause it was hard to change to expressions and feelings so rapidly as it does.
I hope you like it, and find it interresting how synths can sound, when used in a not exspected way...
For those interrested, there is also some extra material which never got in there:

good job.
Not relevant here, but I'm not so impressed by the woman's dance.
Why is she expressing so much agression during the 'animal' part?
Real, aimless agression is a mark of human kind, not of animals.
Animal agression is almost never meant to harm the victim, it's just the need to survive.
To show 'animal', she also could have played 'playing puppies', or lazy sleeping in the sun...
Just a thought

Very interesting piece musically. In fact without such a brilliant soundtrack the whole thing would fall to pieces. Very impressive. I especially liked some of the "internal liquid" noises, and also the voices and theme-like music in the last 40 seconds or so. With modification it could be a very moving "think-music" work.
The only criticism I have is one that I have with many movies made in the past 30 years or so ... What is it with the credits ? Credits are NOT an art form (at least not for me). I know the people who make movies love fiddling with them, but really no one gives a crap. Long credits are boring. And long credits which are hard to read are just very irritating. And long credits which are hard to read AND which are tacked onto the start and end of a short film make the whole thing look like the makers thought it was some epic where everyone has to have scrolling glory. I believe an understated and modest page of names is far superior and stylish (and doesn't compete with the movie for attention and memory-space). And if (by ludicrously small chance) I want to read anyone's name I will pause the movie.
There, got that off my mind
Back to the music... yes, brilliant !
ps: And wouldn't it be nice if an "art collective" actually made something beautifully and uplifting rather than the usual angst-ridden blood / horror / anguish / I'm-so-disturbed sort of show ? Maybe it's because "nice" is so much harder to do.
I hope I haven't been too harsh

So-called controversial or confrontational art is cheap and easy. What about "Piss Jesus" ? Hardly art imho. You just take some revered symbol, idea, person or historical event, then coat it in excrement, or add huge genitals. It may generate controversary but in my book it ain't art.
I went to a performance art exhibition similar to this. It was a guy in bandages rolling around the floor screaming while distorted guitar noise belted out. It was funny for a while, then just annoying. Most people left.

Please allow me to go a little farther on in what I think and why.
First of all, we all know that Thalamus is one of the best musicians in this forum, and in his own right. He’s also a very talented composer and mixing-man! I love his work in general.
I didn’t find it “ugly” because of the blood, I myself have blood in my veins and it doesn’t disgust me, and so there is blood in every human being and animal; I have seen serious car disasters and blood spreading everywhere, it didn’t disgust me either, it impressed me and felt sad, but it wasn’t ugly. When I had 10 years of age, there was a terrible armed combat in front of my grandmother’s home that lasted for 6 hours, between terrorists and military forces, when Argentina was taken by tyranny and futility… When the fight finished we all went out to see what had happened, there were many corpses laying in the street, bloodshed in front of your eyes… I stepped into a terrorist brain while walking, his brain was complete in the floor, the right and left hemispheres together, a bullet had pierced the top of his head. There was blood everywhere as I said, and I didn’t feel it was ugly either, terrible was yes, but not ugly
When you say (Still you can't call something ugly just because of the bloody)
I have to explain that this is your personal translation of what I have felt Hubird, but not what I have felt actually
I can’t pretend to built up a definition of what art is, but I have a very clear idea of what art is for me. When I said “ugly” I was not judging in a conventional way, as I didn’t use my brain to spell it, it was an inner very clear impression, much more real than any word I could pronounce.
I don’t believe in ugliness without a reason to be expressed, as I don’t believe in a great party without a reason to feast. Everything without a bottom line of human values is empty for me, I repeat: FOR ME. I am not pretending for anybody to follow what I think, nor asking for you to think what I follow, I just want to say that I don’t find “ugly” blood, or any other thing in the world, but the emptiness of human values. To put it in simple terms:
I don’t like darkness, I like light! I only like darkness when it is defeated by light!

Thanx for dropping by and lending your, in my case, tired ears and eyes to this.
hehe, I find it nice to have some deferent comments than I'm used to.
I got into this project, because I really like the producer/artist making it in terms of expression. The pale white, and the energy in the film was inspiring for my musical brain.
Actually I agree with most of you, about cheesy art, but in my opinion this is not in that category. If you want to see it like purely visually, and not think about the context, then ofcause it's quite gothic. Though, I find the athetics nice, all white and simply and I like the actress translations of whats going on.
Together with the music, I think it becomes alive in a certain way. When I first saw it, I kinda felt like Nestor did, as I'm a very loveminded, "emotinal naive/pure" (means feelings comes before the brains destruction) and a non voilent person, as I also feel he is.
However, as an artist, I find it great to be provocated and it's part of my contruction process, no matter what I see or hear. I will not go into discussion about fx if the selfdestruction of her, could have been done more elegant or noncheesy, without showing blood. For me...it works...at least for what I think it's about. And that's the driving force. All this process is not intellectual for me, it's pure emotionel. The rest is the works of the producer.
And after all, it's not all the time you have the chance to drive your synths to bee scream
Thx mates...C ya soon

agree completely, but what you always can do is saying what art is definitively not, according to Kant I believeOn 2005-05-23 10:34, petal wrote:

@ Nestor, your - valued - explanation doesn't change so much.
If the images touch you, then the artist's aim is reached.
His message comes through, and the emotional effect is there ( not with me here, as said
).
If the images do not bother you, you probably think the movie is a bad presentation of the message.
I just had the feeling you disliked it because, indeed, of the 'uglyness'.
Hence my reaction

Yes, I undertand what you mean. In any case, what is nice is the proffesional aproache Thalamus gives to it.
Sometimes things hit you in different ways, depending the period of your life in which you sow it. I am not in a very good perdiod right now, and certainly am much more sensitive to things that may agress my feelings. I am sure I would have seen it with other eyes in a better situation too.

I like it, the movie and the sound fits very good together and build an unity.
Whatever has instantiated the girl it changed her to a blood fever.
She hurt herself, she is satisfied going herself to the edge and experiences the full range of a feeling.
She played good and Michael W-K made a great job and takes.
The only thing I don´t like is the black eagle logo, it reminds me on a country that have a similar eagle in their Lower House of Parliament.
