This is pretty cool:

SynthEdit is a shareware Modular Synthesiser for Windows (Win 98 or better). With SynthEdit you can:

* Design your own virtual synth or drum machine.
* Make your own VST plugins.
* Play it live via a MIDI keyboard.
* Play it from a MIDI file.
* Use VST Plugin instruments and effects. No restrictions on how you connect them.
* Record/Play multi-channel audio to disk.
* Play wave files.
* Process live audio.

It's a nice concept which has been around for a long time. But it doesn't sound all that great (although it lets you use self-written DSP modules) and is pretty hungry on CPU.

Some people use it as an easy (but CPU-inefficient) way to make GUIs for their own code.

I've been using it a bit, and I could say that in terms of synthesis it's a bit too poor sonically for us scopers, but some other tasks, mathwise, midigating etc. can be very good.
I've also made some very simple compressor circuits that are very very transparent and effective.

I would definetly recommend it as a source of knowledge, fun and also some good device outside of the VA reign...
