For about a month I am trying to resolve my new computer's problem.
I took my old luna card from my previous computer, and bought a new computer that include:

intel P4 processor - 3Gb
Gigabyte M-Board with TONS of on-board devices such as: 6 USB's inputs, Realtec AC97 sound device, AGP display adapter, LAN device.

Luna is my soundcard.

the problem is that when I work with XP, or 2000, after a short while the PC hangs up and I must restart my computer.
sometimes I get to reach the windows task manager, but when I try to terminate some app's everithing gets stuck and again I have to restart.

Event log shows nothing.

I have asked a pro what is it all about and he told me that having this kind of "all-in" Mother board is not recommended at all in the music PC's world.

then I've tried to disable all the features, and use a different display adapter, but still no improvment.

Any of you geniuses can help me solve the mystery and lead me to the desired solution?

By the way- in win98 it doesnt happen!!!! though there are crackels all the time with audio files... wierd- I use VST's in 7 channles, that requiers lots of memory and resources, and no crackels. but when playing a single track of an audio file, crackels sounds.

Thanks

Go into your system BIOS and start disabling everything you don't use (serial ports, parallel, ac97 audio, any unused usb ports etc).

I have disabled all the onboard devices, and still it stucks. I even added a Geforce card that I had and used it instead of the onboarded one.

one thing I could'nt do in the bios, and might related to the problem is to disable the AGP onboard display adapter. I just could'nt find anything related to AGP or VGA....

how can it be?.. I think that there are still some configurations made in XP that use the onboard resources....
reinstalling XP will help?
do you know a different name for this graphic adapter? or maybe there is no option to do so..

thanks.

the easiest solution is an intel d865perl, under $100 and stable(the basic model).
onboard video, yeeesh...there really must be a graphics choice(agp or pci) in the bios....

Well, I'm not planning on buying a new mother board, not at this time...

and man I can swear I couldnt find any option even related to agp...

except maybe for something look like
AGP/PCI/SRC that is set to 33/66/something...

I can try disable it..
what do you say?

i can't say.

about $90 is a small price to pay to fix your mistake after all you've spent, i just want to see you happy.

if you really want to mess with this board, i'm sure it can be made to work, but first, how about giving the actual model number so that i can try to look up the documentation on the bios?

for help to come faster simply try list as much info about your system as you can

List your IRQ's
List what you disable in the bios
also if you did some tweaks in XP.

this is an ALL-IN-ONE mainboard.
Lots to disable.

Model GA-8IG1000-G
CPU Type Socket 478
FSB 800/533/400 MHz
Chipset Intel 865G
Memory type DDR 400/333/266
Memory socket DDR*4 (dual channel)
Max. Memory 4 GB
Graphics interface AGP 8X*1
PCI-Express X16 (X8)
PCI-Express X1 (X2,X4)
PCI 5
ISA slot 0
AMR/CNR 0/0
VGA Integrated
RAID Function N/A
LAN Marvell 8001(GbE)
Audio Realtek ALC850
Codec channel 8
IDE ATA 2*Serial ATA, 2*PATA
USB 1.1 Same as USB2.0
USB 2.0 8 (4 by cable)
DualBIOS N/A

wow, a very bad choice...bigger is not always better. i think you will have lots of trouble setting this one up.

as far as i can see, installing a vga card, bypasses the on board video, but maybe not completely. also, the video card MUST be 1.5vlt agp4x/8x.

you need to disable EVERYTHING you are not using(most of the mobo). i suggest:
PCI-Express X16 (X8)
PCI-Express X1 (X2,X4)
ISA slot 0
AMR/CNR 0/0
VGA Integrated
RAID Function N/A
LAN Marvell 8001(GbE)
Audio Realtek ALC850
USB 2.0
IEEE 1394 N/A
SERIAL PORT
PARALLEL PORT

doesn't look too bad.... have you tried switching pci slots? the cw card is on a virtual irq and there could be a conflict at a lower level that isn't showing....

are those memory addresses showing as shared or conflicting?

It is under the conflicts option so I think the memory addreses are conlicting...

at the boot procces there is a table that shows IRQ's. the multimedia device has it's one & only IRQ...

anyway how can I set the irq for 10 or 11?

well, memory conflicts will CERTAINLY cause lock ups. you spent to much on scope to have less than $100 hold you hostage. get another mobo and make things easy....

those memory conflicts seem to be between the vid card and the onboard video. that motherboard was not meant for the purpose you are putting it to(using a minivan for a sports car rally), and it is giving you grief. i suspect you'd get better performance from the onboard video than agp, although that would probably cause pci overflows with reverbs or heavy projects. this is the disadvantage to having lots of choices, it's easier to make bad ones. at least you get to learn something about the machines you use....

The hole problem had started when I used the onboard vid card.. so I think the performance wont be better.

I know that it was a very bad choice to have this mobo now... its just that I consulted pepole who did'nt knew enough about PCs for music....

depression....

still there's no way to fix the problem? I dont wanna start buying a hole new mobo now..

by the way - Thanx for the help.....

Why don't you start by disbling the on-board video and using your "AGP display adapter" ?

Oh, and merry xmas.
