Yes this old chestnut...

Has anyone actually made their own STDM cables? If so, where did you find the parts? Are the connectors readily available someplace? I know the ribbon cable is standard issue. Not sure about the connectors though.

They are called IDC edge connectors (count the number of pins on a ready-made STDM cable -> number of conductors). IDC is the standard for the way the cable is connected - crimp-like style.

They are also a very old type of connector and use to be pretty standard in the 80s but not now! These are more a hobbiest thing now.

(i'm in the UK, not sure where you would get them in chicago)

Caveman assembly : you could carefully use a standard workshop clamp to get the ribbon cable crimped on. Using pliers or alike will damage the connector.
