I still use the 'Old Skool' trick of the 'MIDI Gate' most of the time. Usually using MIDI CC#11 (expression) controlling the volume of a synth's output.

Otherwise, I'm sure that there's lots of examples of using the Gate Sequencer module in the .Modular Patches forum (IIRC, there's some examples that come with ModII).
