Hi y'all, just bought a used a16 tdat analogue i/o box by mistake thinking is was an a16 ultra. I bought the firewire cable to attach it to my luna card but as it's the older version i/o box it's obviously no go

;-(

However, I also have a pulsar 2 classic 20 with adat interfaces but no wordclock sync plate. I'm not sure I need wordclock anyway as I only want to get my various hardware synths outputs into scope for routing into cubase sx2.

Can the a16 be connected to pulsarII?? If so which cables should I use (never used adat before)??

All replies welcome, thanks.

i work with the old A8 succesfully, connected to the adat ins & outs of the pulsarII. no problem.

you need two adat cables, optical, 'lightpipes' for the inputs (8 channels per cable) and two for the outputs. decide whether you want the pulsar or the a16 as master, and you're off.
make sure the connectors of the lightpipes aren't of the enormous type, or you won't be able to squeeze them in.
you won't need wordclock

Thanks Andy,

I'm still confused by the adat connections though. The pulsar II has them "Sticking out" and the a16 has "plug in" style connectors. Do they both accept the same adat cable plugs?

the old A16 has 2 x ADAT in/out for a max of 16 tracks.

you can download the Old A16 manual from here

you said Pulsar has them sticking out ???

are you refering to the ADAT plugs?? you have to remove these in order to see the input/outputs. these plugs are used to protects the ADAT in/out.

light pipes are fragile items, I wouldn't buy them used to save just a few bucks.

Can s-mux be used to pair inputs for 96khz
on this model i/o box? Read somewhere that a16 ultra does this.

18 bit 96k would be a strange data format
the old A16 has 18-bit converters inside, I hope this doesn't disappoint you even more...
it's nevertheless a very good sounding device, I have one myself - with no regrets.
details here

cheers, Tom

yeah, thanks a lot for that doc
while it isn't particularily needed to operate the unit, it mentions a very important feature:
the immediate muting of the outputs in case the digital signal runs mad, to protect monitors and ears

cheers, Tom
