disable acpi on hyperthread

Hi guys

i've just spent the last hour trawling thru forums trying to find how to disable acpi on my pc.

But I can't suss it, on my old pc I could do it in device manager, but i have a hyperthread p4 now and all it says in device manager is multiproccessor acpi.

I'm using a asus p4p800 mobo and in the bios I have some options of disaling acpi apic support and few other things like aml acpi, should I disable this?

or is there a way of doing it thru XP, or do I have to reinstall again and run it on set up

any help would be great

I'm not sure if you can change XP post-install...one can do this on W2K, but it can lead to system instabilities.

If you wish to do this, then it's best to do it at install time.

I would like to ask, "Why do you want to install XP as a 'Standard PC'"? Are you experiencing problems?

Damn straight. If your MOBO has APIC, then it is best to install XP as ACPI.

Not sure about the HT, though ... from reading many threads in this forum, it does seem somewhat problematical for little gain.

hi thanx for the info, looks like I might have to re-install windows to get it into standard mode then

my reason for doing this is I have reformatted and reinstalled windows xp lots of times and everytime I use music applications my system locks up!

so I emailed creamware hq and ralf reckons I should run in standard mode

and my old flawless system used to run in standard mode and I never had any problems

maybe I will lose the benefit of Hyperthreading, but if it stops my system locking up I don't care what I have to do

Is it possible to do an 'over the top' install, changing to 'Standard PC' with XP? If so, that approach may save you some time and effort (you won't need to re-install applications).

you can do it with a new install by pressing f6 when asked if you want to install third paryt scsi drivers(at the very beginning) or you can go to the device manager and on the acpi device driver info press "reinstall driver" and then "choose from a list", choosing standard pc. windows will rebuild the hal with the next restart. you can turn off ht in the bios. the loss of ht will make very little difference.

don't you mean press F5 when it ask you to press F6 to install Scsi device.
