Ok... so i just can't find it... i have been looking in the manual for a couple days now...

how do you assign midi channels through the mixer... i hook up seq midi source to mixer midi in... then what? i would like to be able to play all my synths through the mixer...

right now i am pluging the seq midi source to one synth... and recording the midi... then hookin up another... doing it all one by one... it's a pain!

also... do i have to switch channels on my mid controller? i don't really know how... have to read IT's manual too...

MIDI is a control language. It is not audio.

yes, i know this... what does that have to do with how to route it through the mixer?

well, i know it has everything to do with how to route it... but what i am saying is i already knew that it's not audio... you use it to produce the audio.

are you saying there is no way to route it through the mixer?

you can route the AUDIO from the synths through the mixer....

yes, i know. i know how the signal flows... midi to instrument, instrument to mixer...

ok... let me simplify my question...

how would i have 4 or 5 or 6 different synths hooked up at the same time, in the same project, but be controlling each one differently?

in cubase... you setup as many midi channels as you want... and you only control it when you click on it.

ex: i have midi 1-6 in my project in cubase...

m1 goes to drum machine
m2 goes to bass guitar
m3 goes to the grand
m4 goes to v-station
m5 goes to a1 synth
m6 goes to absynth

now... when i want to program drums... i click on m1, and start playing the drums.

when i want to program a bass line... i click on m2 and start playing the bass... etc...

i hope i am explaining this in an easy to understand way... those of you who use cubase sx should know what i am talking about?

is there a way to setup SFP like this... so all i have to do is click on a different instrument, or maybe make a change on my controller or something, instead of having to rewire the seq midi source to another instrument everytime i feel like playing it?

the same way only the midi destination is "cw midi i/o x".....(x is a number)

set your external and sfp synths to the channel selected in cubase. viola!

afaik, you can even use the same midi channels that you are sending to vst synths as the track is only feeding the device/port selected.

of course i am assuming that you have set up midi i/os in the vst midi dialog and also that you know about this:
http://pinnacle.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/pi ... ZT0x&p_li=
don't use the "emulated" ports or you're at the risk of high latencies!

ok, so you are saying in cubase... right?

so. i would do the following...

open cubase.... insert midi channel... click on the out... and select cw midi i/o x... right?

every midi port i have says emulated on it...?

is this wrong? did i install my midi drivers wrong?

the following is listed...

ms midi mapper [emulated]
edirol pcr midi out [emulated]
edirol pcr [emulated]
ms gs wavetable sw synth [emulated]
cw midi i/o 1 [emulated]
cw midi i/o 2 [emulated]
cw midi i/o 3 [emulated]
cw midi i/o 4 [emulated]
cw midi i/o 5 [emulated]
cw midi i/o 6 [emulated]
cw midi i/o 7 [emulated]
cw midi i/o 8 [emulated]

so... is this not how it's supposed to be?

i did... i kinda get it... but not really... i get what they are sayingabout multiple midi ports showing up... but i don't understand how that relates to me?

no i am not doing it right? but using the right method... hhmmmmm... sorry... too cryptic for me to understand... i am a bit of a simpleton.

just:

- Browse to the Cubase SX/SL/SE or Nuendo application folder (usually C:programssteinberg...)and locate the folder "MIDI Port Enabler"
- Open this folder
- Pick the file "ignoreportfilter" and move it into the application folder (one directory up)
- Start Cubase SX/SL/SE or Nuendo 2

you'll then have the real ports available from all your midi devices. open your default template(or any other template or project) you can then in the vst midi management screen, enable or disable ports as you see fit(disable and hide all the emulated ports). save the template so you don't have to enable/disable again...

steinberg's long excuse for why they do things the way they do is irrelevant..... (sx is still a nice program)

oh... i see... i thought that was just for the devices they listed in the article... jeez... so easy...thanks.

so, if i send midi into sfp... and the midi is recorded in cubase... then cubase is just playing an sfp instrument, right? so, there is no actual audio in cubase? so, if i have midi into sfp, then mixer l-r into analog dest. then cubase won't have any audio right? like if i export the song there won't be any sound...

so would i have to send the mixer l-r into an asio source to send the audio to cubase?

makin' more sense.....

*edit* you could also use a direct out on the mixer channel(in the 2448 and some others) to the asio dest, or you could connect the synth directly to the asio dest module(and the mixer at the same time if you want to...) to get the audio into cubase. external synths work the same way, just coming in either the analog source or the adat source or the sp/dif source.....

i see...... so, if i send it to an asio destination and the mixer... will the mixer have any effect on the final mixdown? or do i have to route it through the mixer?

another thing... i was reading about the asio... is it easier to do an asio destination to route the audio into cubase, or a wave dest.? i trieddoing an asio dest... but i think i did it wrong... do you have to add an audio track in cubase... i don't know... i'm prolly not makin much sense...

you can connect cubase to sfp with EITHER wave or asio, but not both. you must choose in cubase and then have the appropriate modules in scope BEFORE opening cubase.(choose then restart) asio is the preferred driver, however. asio is VERY low latency(good). wave drivers are slower and are not so great for punchins and realtime effect use.....

really, this stuff connects the EXACT same way as the corresponding hardware(cubase is just a multitrack in the studio). scope is virtual reality. for the most part, the scope environment behaves identically with the real world.(cubase and all other apps are in the scope environment if the proper modules are in the routing window)

really, you need to read up A LOT more! it won't help for me to just tell you what to do, you need to understand why i'm telling you because the system can be configured many different ways according to what you want to do....also, you need to understand studio operations in the real world to fully integrate what you are doing in the computer. go to the library and get some how-tos on home recording....

ok, well... i get how everything is routed... and it's not the audio from cubase i want to route into sfp...

i want to send midi into sfp, then send the audio from sfp back into cubase.

so, i have the following:

Cubase - Midi chls. 1-8: CW Midi i/o 1-8
sfp - seq. midi source 1-8->instruments
sfp - instruments->STM 2448
STM 2448 mix-> Asio dest.

now... i know how the signal is routed and why i want everything to go where... i just don't know how to get cubase sx to recognize the asio signal... do i insert a track of some kind in the cubase project to feed in the sfp audio signal? or is there a special way to have asio come in? like in the device setup?
