As long as people are happy, where they are. Sometimes I would like to be a Norevegian (for that and some other reasons).

We, Poles, are famous (or infamous) for odd things I don't like. But I'm a patriot. As you might notice I wrote I was from Chopin and Copernicus country. They are people who made someting for the world. There are more like Maria Curie-Sklodowska and Lech Walesa and Karol Wojtyla and Stanislaw Lem. Unfortunatelly there are more Poles are famous for bad things. I hope you don't think bad about us - me Michu and Darolek are guys who try to prove it here on PlanetZ. My house in an open one. If you are ever in Poland - you are welcome. This is a friendly country, really. Don't be fooled by the cliches!!!

She scares me

Hey samplaire - what should I say: I'm a patriot, too (european and german), and the later is not really "en vogue" in Germany if you know what I mean.
But, like you, I think about Goethe, Beethoven, Einstein, Benz, Planck, Zuse, Heißenberg, von Braun - not about that sick guy from Austria...

Welcome to the 'club' I hope everybody can work together to create a better world. At the moment in the UK press there is just negative news about europe. They say now 100,000s of eastern europeans will come and murder us in our beds, steal our money.... and give us AIDS. What a load of crap.... Most people in the UK welcome everyone.... I do. Problem is, being nice does not make good headlines.
Any way if you are ever in my 'neck of the woods' pop in for a cup of tea. Your welcome!
Regards
kenf

This EU thing can be interesting when you compare how different countries view it.
Take the eastern Europeans for example. They are usually very keen to join EU given the chance. They see it as a chance to a huge economical upswing, and even some kind of protection against Russia.
The process of joining EU in the Scandinavian countries however, was met with much more resistance from its citizens. Many Scandinavians didnt want to join at all. There is a widespread feeling that "we have it better here already" and joining EU means "lowering ourselves to their standard"
I think swedes voted yes to join with only about 52%. Id wager that the Poles for instance were much more enthusiastic. And when push came to shove, the norwegians chose to not join at all.
Its all about perspective really

well, it's not such crap but the way it goes - the scum always is the first in line when it comes to cross the borders and exploit new possibilities...
when the Berlin wall fell, the first people going from east to west were of a kind that made you wish that border back.
The first 'businessmen' taking the oppsite direction literally frauded millions of people from the eastern part of the country with crap.
We have UNO troops in Kossovo and some (not that few) fellows from there have built up quite some drug and prostitution imperium here.
Kurdish refugees wearing bullet proof vests entertain us with occasinal drive-by shootings...
and my ex-Russian neighbours prefer to switch of street lights by gunshots (probably after too much vodka - but they still hit the thing)

Btw I've heard they don't steal cars anymore in Poland - now they stand in front of the vehicle with heavy guns and politely ask you to leave the key...
@Sam - that's not a joke but a true story from my climbing partner who is from Poland.
Btw he's a great friend and one of the nicest persons I know - and a (legitimate!)car dealer in germany himself
I'm living close to a so called 'social focus'

and in fact it's hard not to mess up the general public of a foreign country with a few misguided idiots.
It's a true challenge, possibly one of the biggest we're about to face in the next years.
Nevertheless I'm against borders and hope this opening up brings people together - and the wierdos I mentioned above to where they belong, wherever it may be...
cheers, Tom
