Hi,

as most of us PC users have experienced one or more typical PC problem like ground loops, noize, PCI capacity reached, etc , I was wondering if similar problems also exist on a Mac ?

I'll have the chance to get myself the latest G4 soon, is there anything I should be aware of ?

I'll upgrade my PC version of Logic Platinum 5.51 to the latest Mac version and will probably run mainly SFP and Logic synths.
I know I'll loose XTC mode, what a loss  NOT ! But apart from that I don't know what's waiting for me,

any suggestions ?

Thanks in advance
Ronald

yes, here also, no issues known, no mysterious problems, though I don't use Logic but Cubase.
Just (grrr) the hard facts of still no SFP OS-X , plus the PCI voltage problem when upgrading to the G5.
If you don't bother about these two main issues, get that great machine and work with it for several years, you won't regret

stop it Roon, unless your dealer can assure you that the machine is bootable with OS-9 !
All regular Macs are delivered with OSX preinstalled and don't boot from an OS9 CD anymore - but I've read somewhere one might get OS-9 versions as special order items.

Hi
I went through Mac or PC last year. One thing that was important to me was the noise the G4s make, they can sound like hair dryers. http://www.g4noise.com/
I went to my local showroom and I could here the machine over the ambient noise in the shop.
A well built PC will be just as good as a Mac, they share some components any way.
Let us know what you decide.
Regards
Kenf

I thought the latest G4 solves the noise issue, also there is a Apple supported fan solution for the older ones which were noisy indeed.
Dangerous words here, I know, but I don't agree with Kenf here, a well built pc not IS but CAN be as good as a mac.
If after all you got yourself one (it took Nestor several months plus the costs of a -again- new mobo -to show the risk- ), you still have to know how to deal with ACPI layer, IRQ issues, HT, etc, and some here say you still must have dubbleboot and dubble installs of everything to be sure.

I'd prefer to PAY for sureness and internal adaptiviness, if you can deal with the two main issues I mentioned before.
(and check Astro's comment of course).
cheerz

Roon refers to the latest G4, the machine you mention is older and was indeed a complete design failure. I have one in the office  this was the last regular double boot series (until end of 2002) btw.

I used a G4 1.25ghz dual to run Max/MSP and Jitter on OS9 for SIGGRAPH, and it worked perfectly. (despite some OS9 unreliability)

Now my research team is running the same software on a dual G5 (forgot what ghtz) on OSX Panther, and everything is superb. But this could just be a case for Max/MSP. We had some problem with G5 about some audio drivers which just wouldn't work with the new G5-ed OSX.
