random reboot issue

hi -

I'm running sfp 3.1 on xp with logic 5.5.1. The pc is a 1.7 ghz p4 with 1 gig of ram. My problem is this : running the plugins in xtc mode, the machine keeps suddenly rebooting!! Ie i'll be mucking about in the middle of re arranging or adding effects and bam, the machine suddenly reboots.. kinda serious any ideas?

Heat?
Powersupply not beefy enough?
Corrupt windows system files?

Could be a lot of things!

yah it sound s pretty serious, but it's not - a little more detail - it only does this random reboot under certain circumstances, making it 'not so random' - for instance i've been working with the system all day today, a good 8 hours and no crash in logic - it seems to be when i put a decent strain on the pulsar with xtc pluginz and such that it collapses under the weight! for example, the eds16i v2 (which i've read on another thread is v.power hungry) always seems to cause this problem. All of the other plugins seem to work fine. This is my first pulsar project having only recently bought the card, and am bouncing down regulaly when i'm happy with tracks, so it's not too bad.. i just stay clear of the 16i for the mo (unless i'm starting from scratch in a new project with no other pluginzzz, see if it go go from 0-100% in one click!!!)

and for that kind of work,i find sfp mode much more appropriate,kind,easy,fun and effective.random reboots are almost certainly(but not always)hardware related.

Have you tried re-installing the sfp stuff, and you are using 3.1c right? Sometimes a re-install helps cleanup any corrupt files.
Afraid I'm not much help as I have never used xtc mode (I like to mix as much as possible in SFP). I don't usually visit the xtc forum and I answered your post thinking I was in the problem solving forum!

Anyway, cheerio to upover in the uk. Could do with some of the cool weather you lads are having 38 DegC yesterday and no aircon!

last night the machine did a couple of 'random' reboots when i was not placing any particular load on it - could it be a cooling issue? - ie i need to put an extra fan in for the power pulsar ?

might try the sfp reinstall anyway
I install logic first, then sfp right?

For xtc? I believe that is correct.

All those DSP chips on that power pulsar card can generate quite alot of heat. When heat becomes a problem all soughts of weird stuff can happen.

But it might not be heat. From what you say it's only when you run pulsar stuff that the comp does random re-boots?
Couldn't hurt to try running the comp with the case off to see if that makes any difference just in case it is heat related.

Did you do a clean install of windows when you installed the card? Sometimes with a product as complex as Pulsar, starting from scratch with a fresh install can fix problems.

Why don't you post this up to problem solving to see if you can get some other responses from other bods as well.

I had problems with rebooting. Try update your BIOS to the latest version and make sure that there arent any IRQ conflicts.
