Huh ? What ! Eh ? Did someone call me ? What.... um ....

Nestor, 'twas ever thus with contests. All Z contests have had poor turn outs.

And I didn't want to raise this before, because it's my boring old refrain that everyone's sick of hearing....

But I will now.

I can't enter this contest because I never create loops with Creamware gear. I create loops with native gear and then play CW synths live over the top.

This is because there is no easy way to create short loop sequences (unless you use SX, Logic etc which I don't). And the ways that are available are several orders of magnitude more difficult (with my set-up) than creating native loops.

Immediate and simple wav loop export is now an absolutely fundamental aspect of a lot of music production. All hosts and many standalone soft-synths can do this in one or two mouse-clicks.

I know achieving this may be tough and a challenge on SFP, and if the demand isn't there then of course nothing will happen. I accept that.

But when I have raised this as a serious shortcoming of the platform I'm typically thumped back into my box and told how weak such a request is - for example by the Adern team (among others). No wav export is why I'm NOT buying Flexor, and also why I just bought the Absynth 2 update instead.

I think simple wav export is desperately needed and it's the reason why I continually use more and more native gear.

For me it's a question of usability and ergonomics - and native wins.

I still treasure my Pulsar-II, but it's fast becoming a minority partner...

I understand your point Spirit. I would like nevertheles to get to know HOW you work, to understand it fully.

For me, it is clear that Creamware boards have been made, essencially, to work with mayor sequencers: Cubase, Logic or Cakewalk. It is no by chance that this is what Creamware adverticed by the beginning of it all, in 1998 and on... Pulsar is a perfect match to SX and viseversa.

Why you don't like to work with a sequencer, which is the reason Spirit?

Sorry to get your thread OT Nestor....

Yes, CW has always talked up the partnership workings with Cubase and Logic, but for me I think "so what" ? I think the days of complete market domination by those hosts are well over. With Logic being Mac-only, the PC field is wide open.

Now there's the increasing sophistication of FL Studio, Orion Platinum, Traktion, Muzys, Project 5 and many others.

The market is fragmented and most of these hosts do not work well with CW cards. Times have changed, the market has moved, but CW remains static.

By that I mean that all these hosts concentrate on native VSTi instruments and effects. CW doesn't even come within cooee of native convenience. XTC mode  ?

And you can't bounce to wav - or if it is possible it's far, far more complex than native.

But I *must* have wavs - not only because I put all my final work together in Acid 4, but also because Pulsar polyphony is so hopeless that it's impossible to do a full track without dropping to audio.

So when I am composing in Orion or FL Studio I use native.

Now maybe people will say: "Oh, but they are toy sequencers. If you are serious you use SX or Logic."

Wrong.

I earn my living doing this stuff now and I see no need to use massive SX bloatware. And it is so expensive !

And it's also because I earn my living with this stuff that I cannot afford the time mucking about trying to sample Pulsar-based riffs when with native I just bounce "acidised" and it's ready to go.

So what happens is that I manually play Pulsar stuff into Acid. But by that time most of the track is finished anyway and I am just touching up and arranging.

I am hopeful that the new version of Orion Platinum will include ASIO-based audio recording so maybe I can use that like people do in SX and just record MIDI to audio.

Maybe I'm just having a big whine for nothing  . But this is not something which I suddenly decided to do, it just slowly evolved this way. Only lately have I looked at the workflow ad discovered that in fact I use hardly any CW gear any more.

Which is sad since all my favourite synths and effects are CW... Poor Little BassmanIII and Celmo's guitar amp have not had a play for ages...

So that's the rave.

Now, how's that contest going ?

I still don't get, why you don't just record your loop, and then cut it at the bar borders (i.e. measure 1 of bar 1 and measure 1 of bar 5 for a 4 bars loop). This gives you a perfect 4 bar loop. Anyway, you can answer me in a PM, if you want to talk more to me about it.

Hey guys!

I had some time today and recorded some files. I recorded in Cubase SX, and dragged them directly from the pool's audio directory. I wonder if they'll start/end at the appropriate places, or at least have start/end markers in them?

I started extremely electronic 130bpm, and ended up extremely acoustic leaning towards 65bpm  Curious to see what people do with these.

There's an example mp3 of all the files playing at once, no effort to mix or produce, here:

Dbmac's server is empty, except for my files. Anyone else joining the party?

Cheers,
-John
