I consider to buy me an ad/da converter and i thought it would be the best to buy the multiface because of its laptop compatibility in the future.
my question is, can i connect the multiface to my pulsar without the rme pci controller.
and can i then still use the midi connectors, all inputs and outputs or i´m just limited to
the adat connection with 8 channels?
is someone expirienced with such a combination?
please inform me.

thanks

You cannot use the Multiface as a standalone ADAT -> analog converter.. you need to have it connected to the RME PCI or PCMCIA card with the routing/mixing application for it to work.

VERY nice converter though.

if that would work (and i guess it does) you have to keep in mind that you can only have one of the two cards with a working ASIO functionality... that means you have to physically connect them to get sound from one to the other and vice versa. ADAT is a real nice workaround for this.

Yeah you can do all that.

If you were to use the Multiface breakout with your CW Cards you would be limited to the ADAT interface but thats not hard to live with at all. If you want to run both cards then I would suggest your best way to do it would be to run you RME as your ASIO Interface and make sure that your default Pulsar project has no ASIO modules included. This will ensure that the two cards don't fight for control of ASIO. Under this config the best you could do with your CW Card is you use it for instruments and efefects and you would have to physically loop the cables from the RME to the CW Card.

Now if you have a think about this you may very quickly realise that the best way forward for you to go is to just expand your CW DSP collection and get yourself an A16 for all your multiple Audio IO's. Why? Because your CW cards already DO what the RME are supposed to be adding.

The AD/DA's in the A16 are as good if not better than that of the RME depending on who you ask and if you ask me (And I do own one) They are certainly as good.

Just to give you perspective, If I was to begin my investment all over again I would probably buy RME as I don't use CW sofware much any more as I like external gear for the hands on approach. And yes the RME gives you the ability to use a Laptop and feel that the RME gear is more stable although this is negligible. (I've just bought a beautiful 17" lappy and would love to move over to it) That said I love my CW Rig and it does everything I want in the studio and still has heaps of room to handle additional kit.

So either start again with just RME or just expand what you have already. My advice to you is the latter, because when you mix the two, all you do is loose functionality that you've paid for on one or both cards.

Enjoy.
