a16 ultra faulty
hello everybody,
i just need some suggestions , here is my story :
3 months ago my a16 ultra suddendly stopped working : it powers on , it syncs as master or slave to my pulsar 2 or rme 9652 via adat, but there was no sound in or out; i've noticed that all the input's leds were light on at - 60db also if no audio wasn't being fed trough these inputs(also with no cables plugged in) .
So i've sent the unit to creamware germany for repair and after 2 months and a half it came back. Apparently it was the fault of a wrong power adapter which i was using , so they've replaced it and repaired some stuff on the a16 :125 eur
well, i've never had a power adapter like this new one, i mean : i'm sure that the one i as using was the good and original one , i always write on a power adapter to which unit it belongs as soon as i take it out of the box; ok maybe that day i was hallucinating...
the point is that the a16 still doesn't work after the repair, now there is some sound coming out but it's distorted,or like if there was an heavy gate crunching the sound; plus: those input leds are still light on , and this isn't normal,so the creamware tecnician should have noticed that there was still something wrong and for sure he didn't bother to test the unit properly.
Finally : i'm furious , my pulsar 2 still doesn't work on osx and further more i can't use the a16 ultra with another sound card because creamware isn't even able to repair things properly. My job is to make music : no music no money and as i still mix on an analogue desk, i need at list a working ad/da ; i'm really sick of waiting !
tomorrow i'll have to spend an hour on the phone with the support, i could continue about the support problems with their database , it takes ages for them to find me and my a16......
anyway,if somebody has some advice... i just wanted to shout a bit !!

i can only add to the wall-wart, as I had a similiar experience with my cell phone not too long ago.
All of a sudden it didn't react anymore and only showed the battery loading logo (if connected) but never succeeded to fill it again. Ok - accu dead, went to a store, plugged in a new one - nothing.
Decided to buy a new phone next day instead of the accu replacement - but as things go I happened to press some keys (out of boredom with a small dash of anger) and like magic - the thingy resurrected
That got me curious - back at home I measured the powersupply - a whooping 15V where 6 are intended.
That about wall warts - but your case is unfortunately much more complex - possibly the source was a powerspike from the supply line.
But I agree on the complaints about the work delivered - if you're absolutely shure that there's nothing electrically strange in you environment.
Can you test the unit in a different house, at a friend or so ?
good luck, Tom

honestly i really hope it isn't an electricity problem : i bought the place where my studio is and i've paid a lot, lot, lot of money to restructure everything.
All the electricity as been made from scratch, everything is new.
i should experience problems also with the rest of my equipment if it was the case , right?!?!???
otherwise i'll kill the electrician, for sure!!!
What should i do to test electricity? i'm not an expert.

ouch, these (switchable) can (sometimes) be dangerous ones...
at least your unit is only half the specs in output current (1.2 instead of 2.5A) - which means the voltage is likely to drop, which will overengage the regulators.
another effect could be the transformer overheats, some of the isolation melts inside and causes the voltage to change up and down, or even some smoke...
The latter may explain why it used to work for some time...
cheers, Tom

Hi Astro, you see what i mean!!!
the new one sent by creamware and charged 25 eur doesn't fulfill the specs "requested" and i thought the same thing of you about the switch.
the old one was the good one , as i thought.
Now what should i do? i'm really pi**ed o**!!
guys i really don't know in which hands we are now.......
ps: the a16 serial number isn't the same as my old one, just noticed this, maybe it's a revision one ... i'll investigate.

Hello lore,
the CWA techsupport US forwarded this thread to me. I've checked this out with our repairing department. We made some "tiny" reparations at the unit. Moreover we received the item with a false power supply and exchanged this to the correct one.Be sure, our technicians are able to decide, if a powersupply is right or wrong for OUR products.
Later we tested the unit as OK !!! Fact !!!
A few minutes ago your dealer contacted us and all the things are clear now.
I think he will contact you to clear up a few things for you.
I think you can rectify your incorrect constribution here.
cheers
Ralf

Hi Ralf,
well maybe i'm hallucinating, but what appears to be the "new power supply" after speaking with your tecnician 30 mins ago is the one i've always been using .
So finally : the unit was broken and maybe now it works (i'll tell in 1 hour)and as i didn't recognise the power supply wich came back after repair i thought that it was the "new one".
maybe i've put in the a16 box, sent for repair, another power supply and the orginal one is still in my studio?...(i'll be there in 1 hour)
Anyway if i was wrong i apologise and i'm glad that actually the creamware team is alive and kicking , because everybody was alerted by my posts and phonecalls.
Thanks a lot
regards

HI everybody and Ralf,
i've tested the A16 and it works great.
i've also found my original and approved adaptor still hooked behind one of my racks , now i have a spare one...
so again my apologies !
maybe it would be better to write something on the adaptors, like A16 or CW, or at least write the specs in the A16's manual.
thanks and sorry again

i can choose polarity and voltage , polarity is set to + and voltage to 12

But I was completely unaware that the wallwart had anything to do with the service procedure.
Anyway - great it works again and that support is alive. This also proves that 2 sleepless nights may have a severe influence on concentration...
cheers, tom
Re: a16 ultra faulty
send me a picture adapter new-
please
please
Re: a16 ultra faulty
in the manual for my future retro revolution it says that if you use a DC power adapter rather than an AC one, it will work but sound distorted, because there is not enough current (i guess only half of the rectifier inside is being used ?)
Re: a16 ultra faulty
which must be used Perun best result?
thanks
thanks
