I have built mod2 devices as workaround (comfortably having 2signals in one chan). But someone is going to have this question solved with a new device...

Hi Rogurt.
To be perfectly honest I use the mixer + DIs only for the peak meters on input.
When I'm recording other people I sit at the desk and watch for clipping, add expanders or EQ, etc as necessary. But it's particularly handy for recording myself. I have a monitor switcher and a 75 foot RGB cable from my "control room" (spare bedroom) to my "live room" (basement, 2 floors down). As soon as there's clipping I can go adjust the mic pre levels and reset the peak meters. I can't tell you how much grief this approach has saved me!
(A few months ago I picked up the Mix'n'Master package, including the huge meterbridge. But I just haven't gotten around to switching my projects over to using it. It would effectively make the mixer redundant, so I wouldn't need to use the DIs for that scenario any more.)
Anyway I don't see the mess of cables that you mention (all coming out of ASIO) as a big deal. Have you tried using screensets? Alternatively, just make the surface area of your project bigger than one screen -- so that you have lots of room to tuck cables.
So my approach would be: ADAT/ZLink/etc in -> ASIO in, and ASIO out -> mixer -> ASIO out as well as to ADAT/ZLink/etc out.
Or, if you want peak meters, use 2 mixers (that's what I do). ZLink -> mixer -> ASIO In, ASIO out -> mixer #2 -> ASIO out as well as to ZLink out.
You can also use the Control Room to choose which mix gets sent to your speakers.
I'm not sure if these approaches will satisfy all your technical needs, or if I've missed the point completely? They may not be to your liking cosmetically, but personally I would consider that of secondary importance.
There are a lot of features that I think would be handy, including a "hide cables" button.
But I do consider these cosmetic issues relatively minor compared to the headaches of using other DAWs for recording. After all, how many software packages give you multiple mixers?
Good luck Rogurt!
Johann

So you use the VST engine for monitoring? I dumped that after I experienced that Cubase switched "record-through" after reloading, preparing other tracks for recording and some other situations which came in very unhandy.
So I think I´ll stay with making double connections from adat in to 2448 and asio in. At the same time mixing asio out and Adat in before going into the 2448.
Lots of cables in a big project - but the heck with it!
