Native Instruments announces Battery 2...

On your NI rego page you can deactivate installs you're no longer using so you can quickly add a new install (so long as you only have two....).

I recently reinstalled my NI apps and although the process went smoothly it sure was tedious. I needed the original CD, a serial number from the manual, to send a new hardware & serial number from the new install & updated app, deactivate an old install, and paste in a new rego code.

Those sorts of hoops makes having an offline DAW a much more painful decision. I've given up and put the DAW online...

Apparently, it is possible to use another (networked) computer (i.e. other than one's DAW) to complete the procedure. Things are explained reasonably well here:

I get the impression that there's a limitation on the number of simultaneous installations, rather than the number of times the product can be installed, HOWEVER once you deactivate a system key for a computer (let's call it "computer 'X'") YOU CAN NEVER RE-INSTALL IT ON COMPUTER 'X' EVER AGAIN! That's just a huge pile of bullshit, IMO. NI need to do somewhat better than that, surely.

One can have two simultaneous installs unser the following conditions:

A Mac OS9 install & a OSX install

A PC install & a mobile PC install

There's got to be a better way...NI are making out that this system is "better for everyone" but I remain entirely unconvinced now that I understand it better.

Im not sure on the network aspect but,

As I recall, I had installed Reaktor like 4 times that one fatefull month when I recieved my scope card (lol) and on like the 4th install the key generator would not allow me another key so I had to call them, they granted me more keys but they seemed pretty unhappy about doing so, that is even after I had explained my reformating nightmares that month.

Silly prodecures they have there but still scary that they even control your money and product long after they have been paid, its almost as if they are licencing you the ability to use their software, as if you never actually own the application. I like the old method better from them with the serial numbers, to me that was fine, this new challenge/response trend drives me crazy..

That's exactly it. That is the norm in software licence.You don't own any of your softwares, not even your OS.

You only own the right to use their software, and the media itself.

does that challenge - response stuff really work ?
a common piece of code in all NI apps, calls to system information (CPU, OS, date etc)... and somewhere the app is validated or not - or have they included something really smart ?

I'm seeing this strictly technical and I'm far from any interest in modded NI stuff - but imho the CWA scheme is much, much more convenient.
In fact I'm staying away from some Giga stuff due to a similiar procedure

I don't completely understand the non-networked procedure, but in the registration tool dialog, the tool first generates a "System ID", based on your hardware & software configuration.

One can the click "Register now" if you have internet access, or "Save registration file" which generates an html file. I think that you transfer this file onto the networked computer and open it. You get your authorisation key (by email or through a web page I presume - not sure about that) and insert that into the registration tool dialog and then hey presto! You can use the software you've paid money for!

I think that you have 30 days in which to do this from installation of the software.

The dialog can also generate a form which you can post to NI if you have no internet access at all.

Certain canges to your system will invalidate the key, for example, changing your hard drive or system (e.g. W2K -> XP)

I'm currently working out whether the benefits of upgrading outweigh the hassle of 'registration'...

Thanks for the info.
I'm considering to purchase Battery 2, but the hassle with copy protection is bothering me. I'm doing re-formats/changing my pc occasionally, and I don't like the idea that I'd loose my legal right to use that plugin.
Please, keep me informed, if you find out how it works in practice

You can delete your current registration key if you change your PC configuration and create a new one. It's very easy. No hassle.

I actually could use this but I won't buy it because I own 2 NI plugins and they often force me to authorize them again. Since I use them on 2 computers and I have to deactivate the previous authorizations before I can authorize them, it becomes an incredible pain in the ass. It might be because I make images of my hard drive and restore from time to time but for whatever reason I absolutely will never buy another product from them unless they fix this. It interupts my creative flow. After all these years I have a computer that doesn't bomb and I thought my interuptions were over but no.... NI I hate you!

Battery 2 is now available!

I've just ordered mine...paid a few quid extra to get it in two days

Note - their online shop is a bit wierd in that it presumes you live in the USA. It's not entirely obvious how to get out of that, but there's a faint grey link on the left hand side: "change location" (or something like that) which you can use to seelct your country.

"In case you intend to authorise Battrey 2 via fax, mail or another computer please note the following: Due to a missing file, it is not possible to authorise Battery 2 via one of the aforementioned offline procedures. The Registration tool Update must be installed on the same computer as Battery 2 before you can authorise the product. Yhey did a great job, choose 'play all' of the sound player and be surprised by the high quality of them

I went through the registration process today - it's really very quick and hassle-free!

As well as the new kits for Battery 2, there's also an 'optimised' version of the Battery 1 kits. You can also still load Battery 1 kits into Battery 2 (e.g. if, like me you bought the Studio Drums CDs)
