Monitor Speakers?

I know everyone did their "equipment list" thing not too long ago...

...but I would really like to see a list of what everyone is using for monitors. As well the amplification for the same.

If you use more than one please list them.

Headphones too if you use them.

I use a pair of Radian Engineering MS-8 point source monitors (co-axially mounted tweeter with an 8" woofer). Powered by a Technics solid state amplifier vintage 1978.

I also check things on an old pair of Auratones.

As well, I use a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs headphones.

So what do you use?

P.S. does anyone have any kind of acoustic treament in their studio?

Alesis M1 Active speakers. . . .

. . . .fed by Behringers smallest lil mixer. (forgot what it was called)

I´ll also start mixing when my neighbours are asleep with the Direct Sound EXTREME ISOLATION headphones when they arrive. Man, do I love that name

I use Event 20/20 bass, and it's active.

Also use AKG K240 to check for distortions and detailed stereo balance. Sometimes use it to check if the bass/kick is audible on a headphone.

Active Mackie HR624's aswell as Sony MDR cans, I plan this week to also add a set of AKG 240s..

Before you buy the AKG's just have a listen to the Audio-Technica's ATH-M40fs, I really think that they are more accurate headphones. The AKG's make everything sound nice, which is great when tracking, but useless when mixing.

i believe digital designs may be defunct. nice speaks though...

I find that the monitors I have don't tell me much about what's going on below 40 Hz, the Audio Technica's are flat to 5 Hz, so I use them to check the very low end. Also they are really flat in the midrange, and they tell me immediately if I have any harshness in the mix.

They are just another tool to check with...

Headphones can be quite useful during mixing, especially for picking out high frequency overloads. But I certainly wouldn't want to do a whole mix in them. Even if they were anything close to flat frequency response, my ears get tired quickly with 'em. I also don't trust any transducer that small for bass frequencies.

I'm using Alesis crap for my monitors (RA-100 amp + passive Monitor Ones), plus a jury-riggerd 15" Yamaha P.A. speaker as subwoofer. The sub is fed by a Yamaha P2201, is that roughly the same as yours GaryB? Not sure if they're completely different models. Mine is big. The heat sink sliced the pad of my finger clean off last year when I was moving it. It's quite a robust beast, too. Can't complain since I got it for free.

I don't know whether or not my headphones are the same as yours Rod, but I love my Audio-Technica ATH-D40fs. They sound fantastic and they block out a lot of external noise -- great for tracking drums.

When I was running my little project studio in Vancouver I would always listen to mixes on ghetto blasters, car stereos, CD-mans, etc, too. Any system I was familiar with would get a listen.

I'm jealous of quite a few folks on this list! Y'all have great monitors.

EDIT: acoustic treatment -- I have crap all over: books, book cases, stray speakers, racks, a bed, oodles of half-repaired cable... Although I'm sure some folks would piss their pants at the amateurish look and feel of my studio (* see footnote), the control room is quite dead and I like the ambience in the basement / live room.

(*): I was told the other day on another board to buy an isolation booth. *Sigh*... If somebody wants to pay me big bucks to do this stuff, great...
