Last months I've been digging deeper into John Bowens Solaris and the result... a bank with about 100 new presets. The sounds will mainly focus on weird synthetic soundscapes, leads and basses. I've tried to keep away as much as possible from the traditional "Analogue Bass" and "Lucky Leads".

I've compiled about ten different sounds in an MP3: http://www.lfo.se/synthetic_solaris.mp3

It will be released in the next weeks and will be free.

Cheers,

Carl.

Excellent, I look forward to playing with these. Solaris is so flexible it'll be interesting to see what other people are managing to coax out of it. Your mp3 file is an intriguing taster.

I'm working on a bank myself, but don't yet have enough to merit a release.

Just wanted to say that the compilation is done now, and I'll just make some more mp3-demos and after that I'll upload them here on PlanetZ. Shouldn't take longer than a week.

the demo is a lamer...
I'm roughly through half of the entries (sorted by category) and I'm sitting slack-jaw

this exceeds expectations as far as can get

absolutely great job, Carl - the first presets that don't sound like some

tnx a million, Tom

what makes these presets so outstanding is the amount of sound variation you can squeeze from a fairly traditional synth architecture.
A very well designed instrument, though - but it's architecture isn't even spectacular.
It's just tuned perfectly and imho reflects a lot of the experience John Bowen stands for
And it's a proof for creativity over sheer quantity - most presets don't even use half of the Solaris features simultaneously.
They sound fresh and unexpected from this kind of synth.

cheers, Tom

True! It's amazing what John has done with the Solaris. However, there are lots of functions I didn't even investigate further. As Vector mixing for example...

It's a very deep synth.

I'm curious if anyone has found the Solaris owner's manual helpful. It contains a lot of information about some of the more esoteric features such as the sequencer, vector mixing and rotors.

I would be willing to help John keep the manual (at least the online HTML version) up-to-date if people are willing to contribute tips & tricks that others might find useful.

Hi,
I found the Solaris very helpful - I'd already got fairly comfortable with the Synth by the time the manual came out, but it really helped to cement my knowledge of how everything fits together, and would be really useful for a new user of the synth.

Tips and Tricks for the Solaris would be very useful, especially with a slant on the whole Red Dwarf thing as I've hardly got into that, but perhaps thats for another topic.

Ganool (lurching back on topic), I love your presets - only had 10 mins to test them out the other night, but very impressive - more confirmation of how great this synth can be.
Nice names too! (What was it - 'You live in Didsbury'?)
I'm still working on my own set of presets - ETA 09-JUL-2006 at this rate.

Cheers,
Ben

Ben... re the patchnames. You know how hard it can be naming sounds. The didsbury patch was made just when I received a mail from a friend who I met during my stay in Manchester...

I'm really looking forward to listen to your stuff! Patches are a great source of inspiration.

Cheers,

Carl.
