Hi all,

I was wondering if some-one could answer a couple of questions for me.

I am thinking of buying an old A16:

(a) can I route 8-16 individual midi tracks from Pulsar through Cubase and onto individual tracks within the 01V for further processing?

If not, do I need to record the midi to audio and transfer that way?

Cheers in advance

How cheap is the A16? If I am not mistaken you can buy an ADAT card for your 01V. That way you can stay in the digital domain. with the A16 you will have to go out thru a D/A and then A/D again back into the mixer, which seems kind of silly, IMHO.

I did think of the MY8AT96, but, do I not need two to get 16 channels? This would cost £600, which I dont really have at the moment.

Any further advice would be grateful

Hi, again. I was wondering if anyone knows if I can route midi tracks without the help of an AD/DA converter or MY8DA96.

If I need one of these, how are they connected/routed?

I'm a little unclear on what it is that you want to do.

Are your midi tracks playing virtual synths inside the computer? Is there a specific effect that you can only achieve in the external mixer? Or are you running out of dsp power in Pulsar? Please explain which version of Pulsar/Scope and your card etc.

You don't route midi signals through a mixer, you route audio signals through a mixer, so I don't think that I understand your question...

More details please!

A couple of more questions:

You say that you want to route midi from Pulsar thru Cubase...that doesn't make any sense to me. Wouldn't you be sending the sounds from Cubase's synths thru Pulsar and then thru a D/A into the mixer?

Which version of Cubase?

Hi Nprime, I want to route midi tracks to my 01v as it has better effects than the native ones on my system. I want to edit midi through my 01v with live effects.

Basically, I find it easier to find a good sound (with effects) on my virus, playing live.

Sorry if this does not make sense.

I will try and explain if you do not understand

So you want to automate your 01v effects with midi from within cubase?

Is this what you mean, Yorkeire?

Code: Select all

  # 1
Virus - MIDI -> Yamaha (to control effects)

Cubase - Audio -> Yamaha (audio tracks)
Or:

Code: Select all

  # 2
Virus - Audio -> Cubase (to record tracks)

Cubase - Audio -> Yamaha (to mix)
Or (???):

Code: Select all

  # 3
Cubase - MIDI -> Yamaha (to mix)

  Yamaha - MIDI -> Virus
(Apologies in advance if I'm just muddling the situation...)

You've lost me completely. I have absolutely no idea what that last post means.

I'll leave this one to Johann if he wants to take a whack at it!

OK, just so we're clear on this: MIDI is a control language. It has nothing to do with audio signals. Just want to make sure we're talking about the same thing here.

All you need to control the Yamaha and / or Virus from sequenced MIDI is a MIDI cable. Or 2 -- 1 from your computer to the Yamaha, and one from the Yamaha "thru" to the Virus.

16 channels of control commands (change volume, pan, change program, play notes, and so on) are sent on each MIDI cable.

So this approach allows you to automate your outboard mixer and also play back notes on your Virus. All mixing is done outside the computer, using the Yamaha mixer.

From this point you would presumably want to feed the audio out of the Yamaha back into Cubase, to record the final track with effects.

Is this what you're looking for Yorkeire, or am I way off base here?

Cheers,

I want to add effects from the yamaha 01v live on my virus (midi 1-16 if possible) tracks, but if i do not think my virus melody works I want to be able change it. This is more hassle if I have already converted my virus track to audio tracks. Does this make sense to you?

For some reason this has me hooked, I very much want to understand what it is that Yorkiere wants to do.

I've just re-read all of his posts, and I get the impression that he wants to also route audio to the Yamaha so that he can use the board's effects.

The simple answer to that particular question is "yes, you will need an A16 or equivalent A/D D/A convertor". Or alternatively the two ADAT cards for the Yamaha if you want to stay digital and play 16 tracks at once.

A possible work around might be just running your midi synths audio output through the board one at a time and recording the result back into Cubase as an audio track (I don't own Cubase, but I assume that you can do this...). You could do this with your existing stereo card! No money needed!

Other than that, I think Johann was pretty thorough as to the MIDI side of things.

Yes, in that case you are compelled to look in to getting an A16 or equivalent. Then you can keep everything MIDI and work the audio signals through the Yamaha.
