Help a poor developper trying to make music :)

could someone tell me what he think of the guitare sounds you hear on this track ? it's an extract of a track of mine (and you are lucky that i muted my voice for the moment. I have to improve playing and also recording the guitare, but i think it is not that bad (compared to what i could do before).

It is work in progress, and may be i'll post the final when it's done, but thanks in advance for your opinions, advices etc...

Most important to me is you might give the two guitar parts a much more different color, to keep them more separate in sound

Yes, very nice tune - I think the beat is a bit (

) too loud comparing to the guitar, guitar should be more 'visible' in higher frequencies. And I double Hubird's advise to differ the 2 guitar parts.

Of course they are my opinions only which you may reject

When I listen to the song there is one thing I would add - a female vocal - something like Siouxie Sioux or Chrisie Hynde (sorry if I misspelled it). Or maybe your voice fits 100%? You gave us no chance, Mehdi

, so, samplaire, you are not diverting me from what i have done/would have done

Edited : ok i found, the rythms sounds are very close to Visage "damned don't cry" (or another on "The Anvil"). If i change the kick for a kick-me, it becomes totally different. And the rythmic dist guitare intentionally in a Ure style too of course.

I was quite impressed by the fact that although the beats are pretty loud, I could still clearly make out the guitar parts in the mix!

From a playing point-of-view, the timing's good, but perhaps there's an emphasis on sliding to 'get to other notes' rather than on fingering.

Regardless, I liked it!

thanks for the comments and to remind me about it (sliding).
The main solo is edited from an improvisation, some notes are replaced (reversed part especially, i can't play that

etc, sliding was due to "oops i have to go there, quick" kind of playing, now I have to learn to play it better... I'm also trying to play my guitare like a "oud" (fretless, luth) in a style which includes a lot of sliding (but with electric guitare the effect is very different and I understand it can be "too much" sometimes).

Unfortunately, I dont have anything more to offer to what has already been said. I too think that the beat is TOO loud. There is a lot of sliding going on in the guitar parts, but that is not necessarily bad. I think it somehow fits the music. The only think I can add is that the oud technique doesnt require a lot of sliding but a lot of vibrato (I play the oud and the fretless guitar too). The sliding is more apropriate to the sitar technique.

Nice mood the song has! We wait to hear the whole of it, including vocals!

i'll check this : do you know Anouar Brahem - the master of masters (imho) - I was sure he used a lot of sliding but as I do not own a oud or a fretless instrument, i may have missed the point totally - I refer to LP like "Conte de l'incroyable Amour" and things like that, on EMI). A oud is probably my next real instrument (just I wouldn't know how to choose one, and where to get a good one is another story

I know Anouar Brahem, but I am not too familiar with his playing as I do not own (yet) any of his CDs. I ve only heard one or two tracks by him.... what an amazing virtuosity! The tracks I heard, still dont demonstrate any excess usage of sliding...

About choosing an oud... a lot can be said, but generally the things that you should pay particular attention to are:
1) the sound (even and full sound from bass to treble)
2) how easy and how durable is the tunning of the instrument (very important, especially for live playing)
3) playability
4) durability/construction of the oud (ouds are more delicate than guitars or other string instruments)

BTW, where is your origin from? I had an Algerian friend called Mehdi, back in university ages...

ok, thanks to all, now i'll try to concentrate on finishing the track (i just have to stop making a device for every idea that I have and it'll be fine

My origins are a bit obscur and mixed. Myself, I was born in Tunisia, North Africa.

Anouar Brahem : if there is one CD to buy it is "Conte de l'incroyable amour" (Tale of the incredible love) which is very pure. The title "Astrakan Café" on a more recent LP is the best thing I've ever heard, kind of mix of classical arabic-andalus music and european middle age music, virtuosity at the highest point, it is a fantastic title (but "Conte..." is the purest and overall best album). Sometimes it is a bit too "progressive" but the ones I cited are the ones to get.

EDITED : sorry I said EMI, but it is ECM Records.

Sliding: i have to improve it to catch that little something that i want to put in.
