Dub For My Father

My first posting to PlanetZ Music, so any feedback much appreciated.

The track is a reworking of the Horace Silver classic 'Song For My Father' (Blue Note, 1964).
I really wanted to recreate the feel of an old school Dub track here, I think I've come quite close.

Recorded on a PIII 1.4ghz PC running Cubase SX, using a Pulsar soundcard, with the following software:-

The brass is from a second PC, with the Korg Oasys soundcard, using:
St Brass Ens patch through O-Mod Filter

The melodica is a real melodica recorded through the Sonic TimeWorks Sharc One Channel Strip.

The track is one of a number of similar tracks on the recently launced F.P.D.A. website.

Nice one! Reminds me of Augustus Pablo style mellow chilling-by-the-riverside dub. (Wasn't he rather famous for his melodica work/use?)

The only thing I didn't like was the sound of the hihats. Seemed very dry?

Yes, Augustus Pablo was the man when it came to the melodica - the whole 'eastern' style of dub was his creation.
When you say 'dry', do you mean that in the sense of not going through any effects, or soemthing else. I wonder how I can make them sit better in the mix without muddying too much with reverb.

This is VERY cool!

I love the delays, real ragga dub style

I could totally see this in a movie soundtrack, but it would have to be an off beat not norm movie like, snatch, pulp fiction, natural born killer type..

Great work, upload some more of this type stuff, and while I admit its not something I normally listen to, it has a chill feeling and something I could see myself listening to more often.

I've had another listen. Not all the time, but sometimes they seem to 'pop out' of the mix...they don't seem to have much in the way of effects applied (maybe they could have a touch?) but it's also the tone which feels a little dry.

Anyway - I'm just splitting hairs here - it's a very cool track!
