The right side is okay, I favor uniform dark grey, less distracting than those "effects".

None of the whites are actually true whites -- however, I find the current contrasts useful for making the controls "pop" on the surface for easy navigation.
Ah well, I'll never be able to please everybody.

If I do as you say here then I will get others who who say "now everything is too uniform and confusing".
It's always a question of compromise and I certainly made a big change based on your previous suggestions, which I found useful... I like the surface-look much better now after adjusting the overall contrast.
