somebody tries to fool us

The last days I got some mails with worms in it (Worm.some.fool GEN-2 mostly) they use sender names like b.walker or marcuspocus2. So, somebody use our Usernames and tries to fool us. Do you have such mails the last days too?

"sales@creamware.de" sent me a virus.

It's strange because it coincided with my purchase of Flexor.

I scanned my machine for spyware, nothing...

edit: Come to think of it, marcuspocus sent me one too.

Hi,
alfonso already told me he got a virus which looked like it was from my work email account. I can assure you that it did not actually come from my work account, nor is my machine infected. Trouble is, once your email account gets out there into the public domain one way or another, its available for anyone to use.
This whole spam/virus malarkey is so tedious, and it's only going to get worse.

Damn.... After reading this i noticed my firewall was OFF!!!!!

I received bunch of mail in the meantime...

Fixed now, you won't receive anything from me no more.....

There is another virus going around at present which looks at your contacts list and sends out emails which say only "fake!". But the nasty trick with this one is that it sends them not with your email address, but with the address from your contact list !

So emails can be sent as if from you, but in fact they come from another machine.

I installed SAProxy a while ago (the freeware/lite version of spam assasin) - even without tweaking the rules, it's getting rid of about 2/3rds of the spam & viruses I receive every day and it's easily possible to configure it to get rid of a much higher proportion than that.

It sits between the server and your email client and applies its rules to all incoming emails, typically adding "****SPAM****" to the subject line, making the original email itself into an attachment and then moving the resultant email into a 'Spam' folder - other actions are possible. So far, it hasn't mis-spotted one email (i.e. hasn't seen one genuine one as spam).

I'd definitely recomend it if you're getting lots of crap in your inbox - it takes the stress out of checking your mail!

Got an infected email from wavelength too...

I use mailwasher to filter out the impurities. I never opened those emails because the subjects started with "Re:..." which implies that I sent them an email first(which i did not)

I've set a whole bunch of rules in Outlook, same can be done in Outlook Express and I guess in other mail programs. This kills 95% of the spam which is now removed directly from the mail server, without being downloaded to my machine. Email with typical headers or contents falls under those rules.

Any emails with attachments from people not in my adress book remain on the server, and only headers are downloaded. Then I deceide if I want to open (& download) them, most are .pps, .jpg and movie jokes from colleagues which euhm get deleted straight away. Before my ISP started with email anti-virus on their server, all mails with virusses belonged to this category too.

It´s bad to hear that you´ve got problems such like this too.
I´m lucky that I only use an online e-mail provider and one of the first things I did was to erase outlook.
Anyway, maybe one day I get one of those script junkies between my fingers and I´ll show him what a real worm is.

A nice mail program, that I have set up, so no attachments are opened, unless I click the icon of the attachment - I can even set it to double warn me of sertain file types. I can open mail without opening the attachment. TheBat! does not show HTML in the normal way. Therefor, HTML looks a bit strange. This adds to security though.
