Gates Interview on PBS

Well I watched the lengthy interview of Bill Gates by Charlie Rose last night on PBS. Even though I'm not a big fan of his, I had to watch the whole thing because he is so influential.

He said that speech recognition is a major goal for Microsoft. To me this is not such a good idea. I like the privacy of typing and I don't want to disturb other people. Having to say everything into the computer seems like it would be really annoying.

Another topic he touched on was the new Microsoft OS code named "Longhorn". He didn't really give any information on it other than to say it would be a major release and it might be out in 2 years but he couldn't promise that. I heard the name "Longhorn" is from a bar that a lot of the Longhorn engineers frequent. Perhaps too much drinking explains the many security problems and other bugs that Microsoft has in their OS? Gates mentioned that fixing problems with Windows XP have slowed the company down.

I just read on a newspaper that Microsoft is considering having one release before Longhorn. It'll (well, when m$ says it will, we all know that it will change it's name a few times

)be called Windows XP Reloaded.
Are they mimicing CreamWare?

i think it's quite strange that M$ haven't released any "XP DAW" yet.

i bet ALL of us, on XP, have done some kind of tweaking/tuning to be able to squeeze in a couple of more audiotracks.

there has to be millions of PC musicians out there, including me, who would gladly pay up for such an OS.

now we've got "pinball" and "paint"...

and please hold your "there is such an os, it's called OSX"-comments.

M$oft isn't interested in providing solutions (to anyone) - their business is about sales figures and market share.
So is Apple's (now), though their stuff is technically more brilliant - but who knows for how long ?

M$ has all resources to deliver any OS specialized for arbitrary purposes.
They could afford to release a dozen differently tailored versions - if they wanted...
They certainly have good reasons not to do so

What frightens me is the latest M$ coop with RSA for online authetication by unique logon ids. Maybe 84 was just a 20 years typo
