Hello.
I`m using Ableton Live, and I`m looking for a small handy midi sequenser to run with it.
Are there any "Live" like midi stuff out there? Then I`d be able to run my pulsar stuff right into live, and running midi sequenses together with Live loops.
Any suggestions?
I`ve been trying out Project 5 with a DXi midi out, but i`m having some trouble with the timing.. So I wanted to look for something else.
thanks in advance
regards
ras
Ableton + Sequenser
the only two apps being able to run as rewire slave to ableton live are reason and the latest fruity loops.
as you know, reason doesn't have midi output. it's only for the reason devices. fruity loops seems to work.
for the rest it's only live as rewire slave. or something like bidule so you can run two apps in sync. never tried that, but also with this setup people seem to get by.
still, i'd prefer limited but fundamental midi functionality in live. some folks seem to become real emotional when it comes to midi and ableton live

Hmmm. Sounds like the fuss with AcidPro and midi a year or so ago. They implemented 'basic midi' and have been getting flak for it ever since.
Now the Acid users debate whether midi was in fact a useless bloatware diversion; or whether it now needs to be really expanded into a more useful and comprehensive tool-set.

Actually, Acid's problem was the direction of the project as a whole... I saw that app get really bloated for no reason a LONG time before they put MIDI in it.. just like any Sound Forge version after v4.x really really sucked bad in terms of usability (even though they added crucial features)... don't get me wrong, I have always been a Sound Forge fanatic.. but I cannot deny that after v4.x it lost the plot, bigtime.
I think SF's problem was that they stuck too rigidly to the 'standard windoze' GUI implementation.. Microsoft is NOT a good designer of GUIs. It is ironic that many people want SFP to have a more Windows-style UI... no thanks
The MIDI in Acid blows because it is a shit implementation.. nothing more, nothing less. Doesn't mean that a proper coding team with a brain can't make a great program (Ableton) even better by adding MIDI.

Yes, but it's certainly an experience which I think people should stop to think about before clamouring for it to be included.
It also illustrates the old dilemma of having something that does one thing well, then thinking that you'll just add a few more things.
And it's not as simple as just wanting it "done well" - there are all sorts of implications ranging from a redesign of the GUI, user learning curve, interaction of different functions, regularity of application updates, level of support for increased complexity etc etc
SoFo took a punt with its MIDI application that the Yamaha (I think) OPT plugin system would take off as a new standard and users could then "plug in" all sorts of advanced third-party MIDI elements.
In theory that would mean that if you didn't like to SoFo version you could plugin something by Steinberg or Synapse or whomever else decided to make a module.
I think this was a brilliant idea. The trouble is only one company made a few plugins (which were quite good) before going out of business. And the OPT system has not taken off as predicted.
Them's the breaks. If it had of swung the other way SoFo would have been praised for being ahead of the trend.
I agree with you about SoFo though - I'm still using AcidPro 3 despite owning the upgrade.
(edit for terrible typos)
