You just cannot(!) compare Beyonce with Oum Kalsoum. Now That woman could SING!
In arab music, melisma is used to convey emotion. In pop singing, it's just plain pain-in-the-ass showing off.
I am certain if you ask ANY pop singer about what they are doing you will get a blank stare or at least some unintelligible explanation(that they won't understand themselves)

Who's comparing ?? I was just mentioning two instances of a technique both of which I'm fairly partial to as opposed to instances of the technique that I'm not partial to ,as in doing it all the time when the context doesn't really suit . I think the relevant bit is "I'M" .
If there is one thing I know now about music it's that comparisons are pretty meaningless once a certain standard of performance has been reached ,you either dig it or you dont and that is a personal choice .Anyway I dont give much of a flying .... I just wish I could sing half as well as both of 'em .
Cheers

I'm really glad about this thread. I have been watching that stupid show "American Idol" and everyone is melismatic.
I guess this is what people think of as good singing these days. Nevermind that there is nothing memorable about any of these songs.
I think it was Whitney Houston who taught everyone the importance of making your mouth quiver and face contort the way an insect's body reacts in the final throws of death after a good dose of RAID.

what do the words contract, lawyer, record company, manager, composer, author, producer and financing in advance mean to you in a 'musical' context

cheers, Tom
About 6 months ago I heard some tracks from a chick here in Oz [dont know her name the producer was very cagey] who had found a new and excellent way to yodel in a contemporary idiom ,I kid you not !! She does it so well that it could be a new approach if her proj doesn't self destruct . Think about that and be very scared .
Cheers
