"Captain Scott" is well-known and lately rather maligned, but his most loyal leuitenant, Edward Wilson, is also an intruiging character. It is primarily excerpts from his final letter which form the quotes here.

Anyway, enough of history. This is basically an ambient track with vocal and string samples, with Absynth and Prisma providing the background effects.

Technically there are a few crackles and other imperfections I need to fix which plagued the recording...grrrr.

But as an ambient track, comments please ?

Edit: most clicks removed and cleaner mix...

I'm just downloading the track as I type, so no review yet Spirit.
However, a friend of mine (artist) has a web site that may be of interest and put the listeners in the mood a bit too.

Excellent track Spirit.
Naturally the mix is perfect, the choice of sounds, choirs, synths etc spot-on too.
I think the ending is a 500% better death scene than my "Before it ends".
The whole emotion of the track is one of finality and you've really captured it perfectly. My only criticism is that it perhaps only felt "cold enough" at the beginning and end.
I'm a big fan of spoken text in tracks (such as "Hell") and the text used in this is absolutely perfect. Okay, I'm not proficient in terms of many plug-ins yet, but I loved how you got delay (shivers? frostbite? hypothermia?) only in the mid-sentence and not for the whole phrase (how DID you do that?).
All in all a really brilliant track.

I liked very much the beginning of the track, there it really is great! Then, when the speech starts, you leave the chords alone and remove slowly the wind-cold kind of effect… and I miss it immediately. The mass of the chords, which are big, moves in bi blocks killing a bit the sensation of spaciousness an grandeur reached at the beginning.

When the text says: “Seems a pity”, and other phrases to come immediately after till 3:22, have only two delay hits, and I truly whish they were at least four, getting lost very softly, unnoticed.

Voices are beautiful, really nice, nothing to say, just as appropriate as they can be.

At 3:50, the wind-cold comes back, and even if this is hard, in terms of feeling alone and in the middle of nowhere, is a very welcomed thing, it truly is beautiful. Despite I like it very much, I think chords and harmony sensation retires real fast, if you think about the entire track, it’s a shame it doesn’t goes out without me noticing it.

I would love to hear some natural FX here and there, in a very spare way, perhaps lighting and rain would be the thing… but this is a appreciation only.

In general, I love this track, but would not remove the wind-cold sensation, I would rather play with EQing it, and with the level of it.

Thanks for the very considered replies

The delay was just a simple simple delay effect tweaked by ear. I made multiple tracks of the audio and tweaked some of the phrases individually to give them more or less depending on clarity.

But the funniest thing is that I played with the wind effects sooo much trying to get the right tone and balance.

originally the wind played through the wntire track and I had a very complex volumne track where it faded up and down. Then, listening back to the MP3 I thought that it just made the whole thing incredibly muddy.

So I took out all the wind from the middle section and thought, great ! Now I can hear again and it doesn't sound like some muffled 8-bit tape mix. But perhaps they should have stayed in ? I'm almost tempted to reload the "wind mix"...

Some more environmental effects would be good, but to stay true to the environment I could only put in the sound of a tent flapping... no rain, thunder, huskies etc.

And Neil, nice paintings by your friend.

I do like the quotes very much in this, especially those of Edward Wilson:

"Among ourselves we are endlessly cheerful, but what each man feels in his heart I can only guess."

And writing to his wife:

"Gods knows I'm sorry to be the cause of sorrow to anyone in the world.... but everyone must die."

"All is for the best to those who love God. All is well, all is well..."

Very eerie and atmospheric!

If you're interested in Antartic stories, do search for: Ernest Shackleton

For my 2p, the best story of endurance and leadership, ever. There's a book about his story with orignal black & white photographs taken at the time - incredible stuff.

brrrr... sends shivers up my spine just thinking of how it was at the time. I really liked your choice of chords. Magnificent, yet eerrie. Chords often used in soundtracks to suspend a climax, or a turning point of sorrow. It's a tough choice. The voice is there, telling the story, so you can't change keys around too much cuz it causes distraction. Also, like you said, you can't add too much effects cuz it makes the voice inaudible. I think it works as it is.

Personally, I could have used some more essence of fear (probably not shown on the surface), anxiety. Right now, it has elements of unknown future, hope, but an underlying dispair. Which totally suites the situation.

Would have hated to be one of the adventurers tho! Brrrrrr!

Very nice ambient Richard, it really took me into place, I like the text very much.
The Poles are a world of there own, very old fascinating and hard to survive, especialy for the pioneers of the early time.
This track is better than the whole Antarctica CD from Vangelis.
The only thing I don´t like the wind sound too much like a white or pink noise, too synthetic, try my Ambito noise module next time or a Oddity if you have.
Thanks for this nice musically picture.

Hey Spirit,

This is one SUPER track. I got the emotion of sitting on top on a hill in sahara and just look on the eternal sandlandscape below me.

I'm specially in love with the choir, very very emotionally. I gotta use that more in my productions.

Mixing is perfect to my ears
Yours truely
