WARNING - Worm on the loose - Sod it !!!!

Hiya Guys.
I saw on the news the other day that a new email worm was on the loose. Apparently it can get into your system and email up to 100 others within 30 secs.
It contains a zip file that shouldn't be opened under any circumstances.

Guess who received the email with a zip file?
Right - me!!!!
The good news is that my Norton Anti-virus caught and quarantined it. I deleted it, ran a full virus scan and all seems okay.
However I am loathe to email anyone for a while until I carry out a few more tests and checks, so be careful.
If you're expecting an email off me, please be patient. I'm sure everything is okay but I want to be certain for your sakes.

Now, I need to inform everyone where the email came from but I'm sure he doesn't know about it and it is definitely not his fault. It is just one of those things you know!
So, Spoimala - check your pc and I hope it's okay.

There are a couple of vira on the loose these days.

My mailbox almost never gets mail from unknown sources. Well this past 24 hours it happened quite a bit. On of them was adressed a a fictive mail adress (caught by my "all" mailbox). 4 was "undelivered mail" clones saying, that they could not send my mail to 4 people - I have never tried mailing those 4 people.

I love my mail program - I have set it up, so I have to make a slight effort to open an attachment - it never just opens by itself. And it doesn't show HTML in the intended way - which looks a bit strange, but is very secure.

me too, I got at least 10 fake warnings in two days.
I'm reasonable save on my mac, but you never know, and I have a responsability to my contacts.

Just to add that it seems that someone from this community has been infected, because I receive a lot of viruses "from" e-mails from cw users, mainly developpers, including me (but not my private emails, or sf user list, so i haven't been infected).
Of course, I didn't send viruses to you (or to people who didn't get echo

) and don't think other developpers would neither.

As for worms...old worms never really die, they just keep doing the rounds. There's worms out there that're years old (an eternity in computer terms). Best thing to do is not to use M$ email/newsgroup/HTML clients (Outlook, Outlook express, Internet Explorer etc...) There are good freeware variants out there which haven't been designed according to the Open Virus Architecture standard

Use a decent firewall (eg. ZoneAlarm) and a virus checker (I use Sophos at work and at home). If you have the luxury, keep the DAW off the network (I simply don't have any internet access at all at home - keeps my productivity way up and I don't have to worry about nasty software & spam).

At my new studio we have a PC in the office part (XP based). So after one month I checked the system for viruses and ... found 26 of them! Including dialers and ad, spy-ware!!! We haven't any modem so the dialers are not that dangerous but I felt goose-skin on my neck when I realized what would have happen

So you say a firewall? Zone alarm? I'll check it..

Any computer needs to be used responsibly.. you can't have a PC there and expect it to look after itself.. its a huge platform and the main weapon the virus/trojan writers use is a lack of technical knowledge in the user.
