)and a sweet little vocal snippet. can somebody with a decent pair of monitors tell me if there is way to much mid-range in there? not much changed compositionwise yet.

its winter, its chilly. its winter chill. this is just a little something i made last nite, i consider it a work in progress. its pure electronica, made entierly on ModIII and Flexor, sequenced in CubaseSX. a bit of sample mangling were applied on the beat with cubase's built-in audio editor.

Thanks to Adern, Megerov, stw and all others for making beutiful patches for me to enjoy

(N)ICE athmosphere, the sounds are pretty well fitting to eachother.
Try to get a real arranged song out of it, it's worth it!

pretty nice, it reminds me of some sounds on old ambient compilation (too lazy to go and fetch the name).... I was a bit frustrated not to hear enough effect works to my taste (dist, verbs, delays, phasers ...). it the kind of tracks i like to engineer

hubird, i will try to develop this song further, and beeing more of an "unschooled knob-twiddling" kind of guy, i cant promise great composition, but ill give it a shot

spacef, well, it is a very naked track at the moment, i totally agree. and as an "unschooled knob-twiddling" kind of guy, i promise u more effects with time, but i will keep the track kind of "transparent" if u know what i mean. the only effect in there is actually one tempodelay module (and maybe a chorus module, cant remember at the mo) in the MorpheusV2 patch.

try to use different types of reverb, like short, midlong and long.
If you also cut off the highs of the different reverbs in different degrees to your taste you can create more depth layers in the song.
Take care to keep the beat as dry as possible (except the exception

).
Besides, be very carefull with reverb, don't listen to the reverb, listen to the 'room(s)' youre after.
Delays, specially the stereo ones, often are a better alternative for reverb.
(tho in general you definitely can't miss reverb!).

Concerning the arrangement, you could start to emphasize or dramatize the moments of change in instrumentation.
Make every change 'unevitable', and give it a nice little thingy there.
From there on you can get the picture of the ongoing parts easier.

If you wanne keep the song open as possible like you say (agree!), you will have all the room to apply effects.
So nice programming

This makes me think of downtempo WARP music, the ones that don't fuck up your head too much

I like it very much so please finish it or I'll come slap your ass. You know I'll find you hahaha. (I can smell Creamware cards in a mile distance, and there aren't too many around in these parts)

Keep it open, open space and fading sounds give a lot of atmosphere, but try to make a connection to the beat earlier in the song maybe crunch it with efx and turn them more and more off until woops. Well I don't really know.......It's nice anyway.

Nice hypnotic feel throughout.
The swelling pad works really well with the percussion - nice mix.
The elec piano sounded a bit light to me on the higher octaves and would sound warmer with some counter harmony notes, still on the E Piano.
I like the track a lot and look forward to your final version.

Something simple to try, but that should bring a lot :
- seperate the low and high notes of the Epiano on 2 different audio tracks, EQ them differently (the two melodies do not say the same thing in this track)
- try to make the high notes (the high melody) come from far away/outer space/outer world /heaven, and it should already give much more character and finish to the song without denaturing the "naked/ not overproduced" character of your original mix.
Just an idea...

hm... interesting thought, spacef, ill give it a shot. its all seperate audiotracks allready (6 dsp system here, have to mixdown all the time), so ill try experimenting with the two epiano parts.

im also thinking of breaking it down after the "no-epiano" bit, making the journey into land-of-grit-and-distortion, maybe to return to the mellow field afterwards. any thoughts?

yes, different effects at different time on the same track/soud/melody is a good way to modify the ambience of different moments of a track, without adding removing instruments or melodies.
Same is true with rythmic sound (the snare volume/effects can change during a bridge for example, then comes back to normal when the track comes back too)...
