I had the same problem with this PCI Overflow
shit. I had the Via kt133a chipset. I changed it to the new Asus board A7A with the ALI chipset. It's working fine now. No PCI Overflow. Check it out!

Yeah, it depends on what you want to do, and how much time you plan to dedicate to making your system work. 815 and 760 work pretty much out of the box, no tweaks required except to be mindful of IRQ placement (Creamware cards should probably only share with other Creamware cards).
VIA (not KT266, vlink has improved things, but the chipset is still YOUNG and has the pain associated with that) can work but you will not be able to get as many audio tracks, ASIO channels, STSx000 voices & reverbs into the same project. For me, this means this chipset is unusable.
It really depends on how much you rely on the Creamware DSPs and what you plan on doing with your system. If buying new right now, just pay the extra $20-40 and get the better chipset. It'll leave more options open in the future, less driver hassles (gah.. don't get me started with VIA 4-in-1 problems) and more stability.

Well the most important thing is making music in the end anyway, right? Sometimes limitations can nurture creativity. Other times removing limitations can open new portals for your imagination... If you've got a decent P3, then ride it out for a while longer, upgrade once options like nForce, cheaper Dual Processor solutions and the next P4 systems come out, are tested and ready. Luckily, computers are a transient thing... and I hope to keep testing newer machines as they come out for some time to come.
