After doing some sine sweep testings, I decided I had too little bass, and too much highs.

So, here's a test mix I did to see if the new settings mess up my mix. Actually, this tune isn't really mixed, in that I used a minimal mixing environment with the stm1632. But, I balanced the tracks and applies a bit of eq and effects. I also mastered it using my newly found eq->distortion combo.

Anyhow, please check and see if the tune sounds okay on your monitors. If something is obviously going wrong, it would probably mean too much highs and too little lows. I'll be waiting for your feedback.

Uses custom mod2 kicks
303 for bass
hummel blue for lead
triton for keys

Hi Ken,
I have listen to this test several times and with different volumes. In this mix the bass is a little to much for me compared to the highs.
This proportionates when I switch on the loudness of my amp. But when you boost the highs(hihat) in this mastering a little more 2-3 db the track is well balanced.
I´ve got Tannoy Reveal passive here.

But maybe I´ve got tired ears at the moment, be sure to hear other opinions!

That you use distortion on the drums to boost them is clearly to hear and it works perfect.

thanx for the tip. here's another mix I did, probably more "lightweight" than the first one.

well, that's what mastering engineers get paid for. I've had 2 of my tunes pressed on CD before, and they really juiced it up good. Of course, you could sort of tell they were pushing it to the limits. Especially when you have the pre master mix to compare it with.

But anyhow, it's still worth trying to figure out, cuz the process can be used as a sound creation tool.

Hey Ken, The mix sounds great on my monitors. It also sounds great in my car too. It has a "vinyl" sound if that makes much sense. Is this the mastering tecnique you were talking about?

cool, thanx. ya, I wasn't specifically looking to model a "vinyl" sound, but a general analog saturated feel. And yeah, this is the mastering technique I was talking about. You can find details about it in the pulsar study forum.

I have been using Soft Clip - to Peq4 CW. Then in Logic I use Multicomp _ to Limiter. I achieved similar results. Perhaps a little more squished. Have you heard the Flexor Tape saturation wave shaper module yet? I really like it's sound. Too bad I'm broke I would buy it.

This came up really well! The only thing I don't like about it is the hihat sound. It sounds awfull IMO. Very brittle and tinny. Maybe this is a result of the distortion in the mastering technique? Or maybe it's the choice of sound.
Everything else sounds really really good!

Sometimes when I throw a compressor across the drum mix I don't put the whole kit though it and split off part of it. Maybe something similiar applies here?

Tho splitting in general is a good idea, take care with drum compressing, if you'll use compressing in the mastering proces (who doesn't), you're putting two times compressing on the ridm part.
You could loose too mutch punch!.
