I am thinking about changing my cooler which sounds like a vacuum-cleaner. There are of course many possibilities. Water-cooler or any other silent fan.

What are your recommendations for an Athlon XP 2000+?

Zalman coolers are pretty quiet. This is their top of the line AMD cooler :

They use a flower-type heatsink with a fan suspended above it. The heatsink is excellent : I have used one of the earlier zalman flower coolers to cool a P3 700 without the suspended fan even running.

peace

if you processor dont overheat a lot (like mine), you can also add a 100 ohm variable resistor in series which can dissipate at least 2W. it cost around 3-4 euros. With that you can control the speed of your fan (and therefore the noise). be sure to monitor the tempererature, at least for the first times...
i added such a thing on my P3 866, and along with other custom modifies, my pc is very very quiet, almost inaudible! (althought this was not a cheap modding, and i assume this summer i have to increase the speed of my fans!)
