on sunday he went to my home and we recorded this demo song... first, the arpeggio chords that was arranged with bass and drums, and then the solo, which was entirely improvised.
actually, the entire guitar records (including the solo) is a "take one"!!! absolutely no audio editing or tricks!

this song was partially inspired by "For the love of God" of Steve Vai's Passion and warfare.
Khaled Abbas teaches rock/fusion guitar in different music schools here in italy

we recorded the lead guitar thru a tube preamp, then entering in the POD pro and finally in pulsar thru a fostex VC8 adat a/d converter. i added PsyQ to the solo track and mastered all the work with optimaster and a little PsyQ

phhhw. about ten years ago, i played the 'passion and warfare' album until it fell apart, especially 'for the love of god' and 'sisters'. the guitar playing... i couldn't imagine myself playing like that, ever (and i still can't  ). my vai/satriani/malmsteen days are probably gone forever... i don't know, unless Bush is gonna bring 'm back a little later (now, that's real insider  )... but i really did enjoy this excellent musicianship. your teacher khaled sure knows how to play. i think you did a really great job in the mix, despite your hearing problems. i only missed a bit of 'sparkle' or something like that (cymbals&hats ??), but that may just be me. others around have a far less humble opinion regarding this mather than me.

too bad (for me) with this kind of music, is that the focus is entirely on the, let's face it, awesome guitar playing, and the 'song' itself is basically a glorified metronome. some nice arppegios, a groovy riff, smart drum fills,... but hardly ever do i hear real great song writing, that can evoke deep emotions.
i'm into the 'simple' guitar stuff right now.

however, every few months, i have this evening that, for some reason, i start playing these old albums again (rainbow, priest, maiden, slayer, anthrax, vai and the likes) and have a great time.
i think this might just well be one of those nights.
thank you

you are absolutely right!! even me ond't appreciate *so much* this kind of guitar playing, when it is improvisation, technique and nothing else.
but this song will be a sort of a "demo" for my teacher, just to show "what is able to do". i will give him also a cd with a track without the lead guitar, so he will be able to find some melodic line or some theme to work with for the entire song!
in future, we plan to record also some jazz and fusion stuff

Hi there,

Well, the man can sure play the guitar, no doubt about that.

If I should make some constructive critic of the mix, I find the main week point the selection of the snare drum (and effect). It really stand of of the mix in a strange "boxy" way, which the reverb is pronouncing. But the kick is nice. Actually if you have the chance, this track could really benifit with a "REAL" drummer. Also I think you overdo the cymbals a bit. Maybe it would be ok, if you used some more defferend cymbalsounds.

Too, I think that you, by bathing the guitar in delay, is making it out of focus. It's not way too much, but I would indeed, concentrate him more in the mix, both by running him through compression (curse he is very dynamic) and turning down the delay. Also I would make him wider in the stereo field, fx send him through the free MDA stereo (http://www.maxim.abel.co.uk/effects.htm). I feel like his playing, and the the supernice bare guitarsound, can stand to be more "naked".

But all in all, I think the song itself it good enough for promoting him as a guitarist.

Hope I was to any help for you...

Excuse my poor choice of words. I'm also impressed with the quality of the recording. Well done.
