I lived near the German border in the past and we could watch to West-Berlin TV. My friend (he had a PAL TV set while we had SECAM system in Poland) and I used to meet to watch... ads on that TVOn 2003-02-20 08:22, Spirit wrote:
Ah, what a beautiful thing ! I simply can't watch TV because of the ads, they drive me crazy. There are ads everywhere now, everywhere you turn.

Even a miserable GM MIDI version ?On 2003-02-20 09:44, spacef wrote:

You will have to wait 70 years after their death. a cover "musak" version is just the same: copyrighted.
I suppose now I think about I can see, yes.
But it doesn't seem to be on same "crime scale" as playing a real version without permission....

yes, for beautiful colours (PAL is better than SECAM and additionaly all ads are overcolourized). Of course the memories make me feel ashamedOn 2003-02-20 11:24, Spirit wrote:

hmm... I haven't thought about it that way, yet. European ads are a bit different than American. But hmmm... the first foreign ad was Limara deodorant. I think and it was American style but we were jelous it was produced that pro way rather than laugh. It's difficult to translate or understand.I heard that people in many East Bloc countries at first found US-style ads very funny because they saw them as completely meaningless and irrelevant and thought it strange that anyone would believe them.

hm, maybe you can use some songs what didn't write jagger and richards like: time is on my side, heart of stone, if you need me, little red rooster, it's all over now, not a fade away, come on, i wanna be yout man, you better move on, susie q, under the board walk and many other covers in stones performing?!
also, i don't know what is about songs what jagger and richards write with names nanker and phlegde, because they feel shame for earlyer song, before "the last time". one of them is "play with fire".
i'm afraid if you will wait for keith richard's died, that you will wait long time, even someone will say he's already dead.

Sandro, I know you're a bit of a Seekers fan so I must tell you why I absolutely *hate* this group....
Do you know a song of theirs called "The Carnival is Over" or something like that ? I have only heard it a couple of times but was shocked: the tune is EXACTLY the same as an old Russian folk song (I'll look up the name if you're interested).
Apparantly this song of the Seekers was a hit. But it was stolen without any acknowledgement (that I know of) to the original, and was certainly not billed as a "cover version".
I really dislike that sort of thing.
In fact I hate it almost as much as advertisers stealing sublime classical music and using it to sell cheap crap and creating product associations with famous music.
Rant over.

actualy, i don't listen seekers anymore. i liked them when i was much younger. i still have lp's, 5cd complet, raritet koncert in bbc and last seekers koncert.
now i rather listen some new comercial music like fatboy slim, thievery corporation or moby, but i still keep my seekers in good memories like some nice part of my positive nostalgie.
i know tune "carnival is over" but i didn't know about that
i like songs like: i'll never find another you, colours of my life, walk with me, last thing on my mind, georgy girl, morning town ride... hm, enough trash for yours ears, spirit?! he, he

... so this means you've given up on the idea stealing that Stones' tune for your customer ?On 2003-02-21 02:38, Spirit wrote:

cheers, Tom
Ouch !
Well, I'd be controversial here and say that Stones music is not even close to being in the same quality category as classical, but I suppose some people would say it is.
In my defence I should add that the piece I was doing was about the Stones' first concert in Sydney (they're touring Australia right now), so it was appropriate and not stealing it to advertise something different. The record company probably would have given permission, but I couldn't wait that long to swap paperwork.

actually I work in advertisement world. The studio I work at is such one. That is probably caused by those TV-ad meetings with my friend in the past, hehe. But seriously - I agree they would give you permission for sure - it is their business and a free promotion, isn't it? I say that because I sometimes prepare a woman-mag ad with a cd gift. They always have permission to have top artist songs as the background part, with a vo teasing you what's inside the mag. no prob.

Copyright has nothing to do with the merit of a creation, but with the fact it was created, no matter how bad it can be (all taste are in the nature, some people hate trance music for example, but it deserve the same copyright as a gershwing masterpiece or whatever is your top composer).
it is generally easy to get permission (see with your national copyright office for ex, then phone to the guy, exchange agreement by fax or mail, without the need to wait to begin your work ), but it is sometimes more difficult to know who holds the rights for a certain tune due to various licenses in various countries etc...
