Here is a song that I have recently remixed for a band in the States called Lakeshore Driving.

The song is called "Poolside Anthem" and the original can be heard via their website.

Thought I would post the file here for feedback.

Original tune was a mellow 90 bpm track that I bumped up to 115. I took the original vocal and then re-wrote the arrangement to fit the style.

Everything was recorded and mixed in Logic on a Dual 1ghz Mac running OSX. Wish I could have used my Pulsar on it but alas...no SFP for OSX...

Hi Kamurah,

First of all I'm sorry my review will not be a sweet one (but you posted your remix here to have constructive not optimistic ones, I suppose!

). I'm going to be constructlive and friendly:

1. the piano - ate the beginning is too rough or too less rough (it shoul be more filtered or more clear)

2. the vocals at the beginning should be more in time. I think those looped endings 'eyeye e e e e' are unnecassary. the eyeyeyeyh are enough to be here straight way with no frills (and they are good!)

3. the reversed crash should be in time with drums and piano, too!

4. the bongos beginning in 0:21 are too late for me.

5. chorus parts of the song are too dry for me. the other parts seem to be wet while the chorus is too weak this way it is. I would add a nice mellow pad underneath.

I hope I would be any useful. The overall feeling is ok

Hi Kamurah,

Sorry, not going to go into so much detail, but just wanted to say that I was really impressed by this.

I have to say I disagree with most of Samplaire's criticisms apart from the bit about the bongos at the start, which could probably do with a bit of a tweak.

I thought it created a really good atmosphere and the sample manipulation made it feel more contemporary.

I hope you don't take it too personaly (at least it is your music, but...) I decided to write all above not for making you sad or angry but to try help you a bit. At my work there are 3 of sound engineers and we always ask others for the critic look at our work. You know other ears could find something that you missed. You can agree with it or not. It's just a cold suggestion. As I said the overall feeling is ok but the devil exists in details

great pop tune. Certainly has a lot of things going on. The efficiency of all the parts put aside, I think the tune works as a whole. The concept is there.

The vocals seemed a bit weak here and there. The chorus or the hook could definitely use some more harmonic padding. Be it pads or harmonized voices. Just a little something to underline the melody.

I do have the same opinion about the looping eyeyey. It's an effect, but I didn't think it was too musically effective. More of an attention getter, so I guess it does serve a purpose.

Bongos seemed a little dry, and sort of out of context compared to the rest of the tune. (being all zappy and 'lectro)

Anyway, the feeling of the tune as a whole is really nice. The arrangement keeps ya interested, takes turns at the right places, and takes the listener along very nicely. Rest are just details I suppose. The vocals being a bit low probably needs to get fixed, but shouldn't be too hard.

I especially liked the piano strum drop. Great scale. I think I want to do that some day.

Thanks for the feedback. The piano drop is actually the seventh chord of the scale quantized to 32nd notes. Makes a great transition.

Maybe I should have given more details behind the mix.....

The vocal melody you are hearing (in the chorus) is NOT what the singer originally sang.... I comped together a new melody to bring more of a repeating "hook" to the song. So the stutter edits and repeats are totally done entirely for effect rather than aesthetics. Some of the originals were double tracked but the pitch control was iffy....so I just kept them thin.

The bongos...hmmm...
It is so interesting you guys zeroed in on the bongos. They were an afterthought...a filler to add more percussion to the rhythm...and to tell you the truth I hardly pay attention to them. (perhaps I should go back and re examine them)

I do admit the mix itself is rather lacking in effects....I was trying to keep it pretty dry....the style was supposed to be in the vein of Brian Transeau with the edits and breakbeats.

Again...thanks for the input guys it really does help to get other ears on the mix and different perspectives.
