the screen is a fixed frequency one, unable to sync to multiple resolutions.
The startup video timing is less demanding, so you see the repeated picture (which shows that screen frequency is already to high).
Afterwards with final resolution the monitor gives up it's sync efforts and shuts off - fortunately, because the high frequency would physically kill it within rather a short time.
The 16" was a nice model at it's time and with the proper values on your videacard it would still run. There should be a setting in the monitor control panel for 16" if you activate 'show all resolutions', something around 864x632/75 hz.

DUAL SCREEN on Mac
damn, tom, sometimes i feel ashamed of how little i know...
i'll have a look at the monitors CP.
thanks.
EDIT
tom, you devil you!!!
fantastic! now, if only i win the auction on ebay for the radeon 7000 AND the card recognizes the monitor (the ATI rage 128 does, so i guess the radeon will too), i'll be a really happy man!
manymanymany thanks.

right, next question...
how do you guys give the second monitor it's juice? do you just plug it straight into it's own 'wall power socket' and switch it on/off, or is there something more i should know? can the power supply of the computer handle two screens, so i can make my own 'power divider'? do i need to turn it on before the computer?
all pretty easy to find out myself, but better save than sorry, so i just ask, not?

hi Andy,
tnx for the compliments - I really should know because I've sold those items in the late 80s
... and it was fun, we had 30-60% margins
The outlet on the back of the Mac is just a through of the wall outlet, it isn't switched by the power supply.
It normally doesn't matter when you switch the monitor on, but I can't tell for shure with the old 16" as it cannot communicate with the video card like newer models do.
I guess it's not very energy compliant so you might need to switch it off manually if it doesn't do it automatically at power down of the Mac.
Play it cool on eBay: lots of people replace their cards for the faster gaming stuff, so there's a constant supply
cheers, Tom
