My main composing instrument is the keyboard. My main performing instrument is the Chinese bamboo flute. (just a flute) Recently I found out that I can compose better melodies on the flute.
It's hard to say who inspires me the most. Of course, the Z music page is always full of new info and styles. That's always cool. It's also nice to watch TV, cuz then I'd be hearing the music within a set context. So, for me, it's more about the situation, and not quite as much a certain artist, or style. Oh yeah.. but Bill Evans is an exception. Always inspiring.

I can't play much else besides a synth ... I'm a pretty average bass player although I do enjoy playing it; basic drums (electronic only); and I'm trying to learn a non-powered instrument, the harmonica.
My favourite music is the romantic era classical composers such as Bruckner and Liszt. I also am much inspired by Rimsky-Korsakov, Bach, Wagner, Resphigi, Khachaturian, Ravel, Faure etc. I'd say about 75% of my CD collection is this music.
But I think that virtually nothing of this comes out in what I write. I jam a lot and try to play in the solo / quartet of classical pieces but haven't written anything like that. But as soon as I have some money to spare I'd very much like to get some good strings and choir sample CDs and give it a try. I fear the results would sound quite bad, but I'm sure I'd have fun
I also listen to quite a bit of popular music from the 20s, 30s and 40s - the era when melody and lyrics seemed to be the prime elements in a song rather than today's concentration (in many styles) of rhythm and texture. I'd like to sing but as anyone who heard my song contest entry will agree, I simply sound bad
Bringing up third place is a modern micture of punk and classic electronic: Sham69, Cockney Rejects, John Cooper Clarke, Exploited, Anti-Nowhere League, mixed in with Kraftwerk and Gary Numan. I do like this music but think it is also "easy" and "flimsy" music, it has no depth of feeling like classical pieces. Of course it's also the style closest to what I write, probably because it's easier than classical or early 20th popular music

My main instrument is the synth, since I bought my first Korg 700. I can manage an Em on an acoustic guitar (!) and I like to just sit and play the blues sometimes on a piano.
Main inspiration? Has to be Tangerine Dream, Rubycon/Ricochet era and other bands or artists into the "Berlin School" style.
Mike Oldfield contributed too in the past.
Space music too by people like Jonn Serrie and Michael Neil.
Who do I listen to now? Probably a variety of 4 different styles. For the Berlin School stuff it's Redshift, Ron Boots, Node, Radio Massacre International and Air Sculpture, plus early TD stuff.
Secondly I'm into good Celtic/Celtic influenced music such as Cappercaillie, Iona, Maire Brennan, Clannad, Karen Matheson, Steve MacDonald and especially Secret Garden.
Thirdly I love trance and techno so if I'm in an aggressive driving mood I try and knock the panels out of my Fiat (Failed In All Tests or Fix It Again Tomorrow) with some cranked up club mixes.
And finally, I have classy CD's made up of tracks from this website.

well i've been naging about a gibson sg here for a while so i guess my main inst, next to singing, would be guitar, i started up playing bass tho which i still find the most fun to play.
since i'm mainly a singer i'm a sucker for bands/artists with (imho) unique voices.
the police, the beatles, steve miller, u2, third eye blind, sting (on his own), thin lizzy, and of course elvis presley.
right now, other than the music section here, i've been listening a lot to robbie's latest, audioslave and foo fighters ditos. plus a new found interest for manhattan transfer, ELO and songs from the musical "hair".
but not right now though... hungover like a dog.

The first instrument that I learned was the drum kit. I played it for 15 years, but not anymore. The flute might be the one I'm most familiar with now, but I also sing, play the piano, clarinet and bass clarinet. I'll be looking forward to learn more instruments, for it seems that I must be as independant and versatile as possible, due to a lack of determined partners around. This is unfortunate, but at least I get things done myself...
My main musical influence is silence. That's where I find the melodies that I manifest. Besides silence, I love Bach, Debussy, Ravel, Shubert, gregorian chants, music for harp, Enya, barbershop quartet, antiquity's music, Arvo Part, and probably many more.

Too many really to choose from, but Whether Report has always been one of my preferred bands above everything else, I admire their compositions, cohesive sound, the way they jammed together, played their solos, everything! Nowadays Pat Metheny Group gets my best vote, I really enjoy them much; Tribal Tech is fantastic too, absolutely inspiring group. I have to add many bass players: JACO PASTORIUS, Stanley Clarke, Alphonso Johnson, Karol Kaye, John Patitucci, etc., etc., and etc… Drummers: Peter Erskine, Guittarist: Pat Metheny, ALLAN HOLDSWORTH…, Johnny Mclaughlin… etc…
Well, I realise I should go through every one of the main used instruments in the world and that would be too much. Really men… there are so many people I admire deeply the way they play and compose that… and there are soooo many different styles… it’s crazy even trying… I’ll never finish…

I've studied classical music (conducting), so a big influence on me has all music from Palestrina to Penderecki. Favourites: hard to say, but especially Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin!!!, Brahms, Wagner, Bruckner, Strauss, Mahler, Strawinski, Shostakovich ...
When I really need inspiration, silence and red wine is the best. Then I write it down with paper and pen. If the idea is complete (main themes, form, main sounds etc.) I'm going to switch on the PC. Good synth sounds are sometimes very inspiring.
When I have to compose, I don't hear much music - I'm afraid it disturbs.
That's why I don't know so much music as some other PlanetZGuys.
