Hello everybody =)

Well...
Here i am again asking for your advice =)

In a earlier post i wanted opinions about studio microphones.
You can read about it here:
http://www.planetz.com/forums/viewtopic ... orum=31&15

Now i have desided to get me a RODE NTK.

And now you wonder why im telling you this....well....

Now i am in a hunt for a Tube Pre Amplifier....
I have narrowed down my choices to two small machines.

NR.1 is the DBX Mini Pre
URL: http://www.dbxpro.com/minipre.htm

NR.2 is the Art Tube MP Studio V3
URL: http://www.cdrecordingsoftware.com/artmpstudiov3.html

I want to know if there are people here that have experience with these "boxes" ???

Wich one should i get.
The DBX is only 20 dollars cheaper than the ART.
So the price doesen't mather.

I just want to know what you people think about them.
I have always used DBX kompressors. I cant truly say i have allways been
satisfied with the result.
I trust DBX and it's hard to brake old habits =)

But i have heard that many (at least in sweden) get the ART because it is cheap and performs extremly well.

So anyone that has had experience with either one of these two "boxes" may come forward and tell me your opinion =)

As allways i thank you for giving me advice when i need it =)

Sincerely yours Jngaelin

Hi, i own a Rode NT1000 and a Art Tube MP, but not the v3... What i can say, is the Rode Mic is really fabulous, but the Art Tube MP, is not up to par at all... It is doing the job 'ok', but introduce really too much noise... It is really noisy, i don't feel it is a good match for a mic the level of the NTK...I think you really need something better to benefit the qualities of the NTK. Else, it is like putting a Ferrari motor in a Lada...

Have a look at the MindPrint Envoice, lot less noise (i tried it at my friends place, he use a rode nt2a)... Less than half the noise than Art Tube MP... The MindPrint is also using tube, and can also output to spdif for crystal clear takes. This would be my next buy...

I've had a look at the Art DTS (digital tube system) which seems (in specs at least) less noisy...

But the real winner for me, (not in price though) would be the Apogee Mini-ME... But, let's just say it is not the same price range...

Hey there!

I just got the Aphex 207 mic tube preamp driving 2 Rode NT2s. The sound mix result is just absolutely stunning! I was also considering Presonus' M20 but what sold me to Aphex was their true tube amplifier called Reflected Plate Amplifier.

I don't have it myself, but once was interested in that unit because it's a cheap channelstrip. I gave up the idea because it has a very special sound which is advertized as '...radio (ad) speaker vocals' or something like that. Imo there's a kind of harmonics introduced by the 'enhancer' stage that's directed against the tube sound.
The budget Joemeek stuff is said to match the NTK's character much better.
I only know from audio examples of a big micpre comparison feature, so just take it as an impression, not a fact.
...somewheeere over the rainbow... is a nice tune, but listening 300 times can be

your neighbourhood:
sample the couple, nothing comes close to realism
it may not be as it sounds, there can be truely desperate situations looking like two complete idiots acting...
if you know they ARE idiots, forget the latter

cheers, Tom

Well, I have the ART (not V3) and I'm satisfied ... I can't hear a big noise. I combine it with the new AT 4040, it sounds crispy and with rich details.
And it's a naked preamp with no voice processing or so, only with a nice tube. All that like EQing, compressing etc. you can make with pulsar.
But I'm really no specialist in microphoning. Read it and forget it.

Greetz, Thomas

I've been using Tube MP units for years and love them. I also have some dbx tube stuff. Frankly, I think you can't go wrong with either of these products. If your budget is such that you need a $100 (USD) solution, then either the ART or the dbx units should work fine for you.

But if you really want to make sure you're getting the best from your Rode mics, I'd suggest spending a bit more and going for a dbx 386 rack-mount unit (or something like that). The 386 is a bit cleaner sounding than the Tube MP. The Tube MP has a unique character that you may, or may not like.

JoeMeek preamps also have a unique character. I wouldn't classify them as transparent - but they are very warm and musical sounding. Highly recommended!

If transparency is more important to you (with just a hint of tube warmth) then stick with dbx. Have fun finding the perfect solution!
