Hi,
I was wondering if someone could please let me know how to properly connect the STS5000 and the other STS samplers with Logic. I am using Logic Gold 5.3 and still learning. Could someone please summarize the different features of the STS series - like where to use each one for whatever function, why not to use one or another etc...

Your help is very much appreciated

Use STS2000 if all you want to do is play preformatted STS programs.

Use STS3000 if you want to start using a few filters and/or make your own samples/programs. You can also start using individual outs for programs which is really useful on drum programs where individually processing drum samples with different effects is really popular.

Use STS4000 if you want more polyphony/voices and want more filters and individual outs.

Use STS5000 if you want the ability to seriously time stretch and morph your samples. You can also see all 16 programs at once in their bigger window.

Now to hook up STS5000 with Logic Audio. It depends if you're on Mac or Windows. Generally though I would route the audio outs of your STS series into the ASIO Dest module which can be configured for however many virtual "ins" you need up to 64(?) or is that 32(?). I forget. You can go directly from the STS to ASIO and Logic or you can send the STS through a mixer and FX in Scope/Pulsar then to ASIO and Logic or you can. . . there's lots of possibilities. Experiment.

Thanks for the reply

I was wondering though,
If the STS is connected to the ASIO driver how can I make use of the matrix editor in Logic? I use the matrix editor in Logic to compose with midi. Is there a way to wire the STS so that it plays as a midi instrument?

Yes.

You simply connect Seq source to the midi in of the STS and then assign each program to what ever midi channel you want.

It's best to make a new multi instrument in Logic and assign it to your creamware midi ports.

Then you will have 16 midi channels to work with.

Ok thanks again for the replies,

When I assign the first program to Midi 1 I get the general Midi sound happening over the top unless I turn down my synth (local is definitely off); and when I record it doesn't play back from the STS, it only plays back the general midi sounds??? I am environment challenged. I will never use those general midi sounds. How do I get rid of them so that I can easily assign midi channels properly?

p.s. does anyone have a logic song template with it all happening properly that they may be able to email me? or am I thinking this is more difficult than it really is?

sincere regards
shab

You need to read your logic manual.
You have the sts assigned to the wrong midi port

Hi again,
I still can't figure it out. The STS 5000 doesn't have a midi out - does this have something to do with it? Doesn't it have to plug into the sequencer midi destination?
