how is used the envelope follower?

for example you can send a drum pattern or any other sound to capture its amplitude evolution and output an envelope to gate another sound according to the first.

this is the link for a very simple mod2 patch called "expressor" that does exactly this. i use it as a breath control for winded sounds lixe harmonica, sax etc.
instead of air, i use voice.
but you can use any other sound.
it's a very little patch, and is a perfect tutorial for the envelope follower.
