I have installed win 2k in standard mode. I am now getting " It is now safe to shut down-------" Whenever I check the APM box I get a constant reboot. Any suggestion??? It was shutting down properly in ACPI mode.

Try it with Service Pack 3. If this does not help - hmm, I think you have latest BIOS -

No, ACPI is not needed at all, it is even recommended to disable it most of the times, it depend on motherboard...

For the shutdown features, go in control panel-->power options->APM and activated 'Enable Power Management support'

That's it !

Unless the OS is XP, I would not advise ACPI. Better is even when your mobo has APIC, it then has way over 16 IRQ's: no emulations, but real IRQ's!

My mobo is ASUS TUSL2-C. I tried what Marcus said same prob. I tried ACPI but the Cards are sharing IRQ 9 with my video card. APM the system is always rebooting. Thanks for the replies.

This is probably because you changed from ACPI to standard mode after install, not before, so you would have to go in devices manager and install a new system devices called 'Legacy APM'. Which is not installed when you change from ACPI to standard after install.

I pressed the F5 key during install and got a few installation choices. I chose STANDARD P.C. Everything is working GREAT except SHUTTING DOWN. I must do it manually. I guess I have to live with this

I have searched all the Win 2K forums. I have not seen this SHUTTING DOWN issue being discussed. It seems as though it is something normal with Win 2K in that mode. I would be moving over to XP weekend. Thanks for the replies.

You can set it in the BIOS, before installation of an OS.

You must hold the F5 key during install. You would have about four choices but choose STANDADRD P.C. Why not got to Win XP? It is based on the same as the Win 2K Kernel. It is the ideal OS for Windows Music Systems. I have tried every others from Win 95. None is as stable as Win XP. This is my very honest opinion. I understand Microsoft is only going to start supporting Win 2K and XP in the future so why not learn it NOWWWWWWWWWWW.

hello Atomic, earlier in this thread, you said :

"Unless the OS is XP, I would not advise ACPI. Better is even when your mobo has APIC, it then has way over 16 IRQ's: no emulations, but real IRQ's!"

What is APIC? I have a dual processorsd station (with one CPU installed) and before disabling ACPI, i had twice the number of IRQ's. I'd like to know if that's the apic thing you were talking about.

This station is a compas evo w8000 with p4Xeon processor. Do you know if i have to turn ACPI off to have SFP working fine ???
Or can i turn ACPI (or APIC id dunno)back on ??

That would help as i still have an IRQ sharing between my scope and scsi HDD controller (ultra 160 scsi controller).

I do not think that it causes problems, but when using Modular II, i get some display latency. Modules in modular take a long time to load and sometimes crash the system.

i upgrade to win2K few day's and i realize for the first time what is stability after
wi98 but when i open SX under win200
and load 5 instrument that they are heavy like fm7 absynth atc... to see what happend to cpu load and to check if i can continue with win2000 and sx or go back to win98 and vst5.1,
my p3 700mhz sows allmost 50% of cpu load and that without eny EQ or plugin's .
ain't it go worse with the heavy xp ?

abre,
although what u have said i see that u also using win2k whay ?
BTW what is your set up ?

there are lots of users who would tell you "xp over 2k".2k has some serious limitations for a daw and xp can be seriously trimmed down(ask atOmic..or better yet,the tips and tricks forum).more ram is very helpful(i use 1 gig).....

you did ask for help but maybe what you want is to argue..i would help with the latter but i type too slow.as to your set-up,do what you like............
