I got a LunaII & just received today the SX update for Cubase. NOticed it needs XP or W2K...so i've to upgrade the OS..
Now...what's better of those two?
Friends of mine & other music makers said to go for W2K. Are they right?
Thanks for the eventual replies

I would say XP, because it doesn't have the same wav driver number limitation. Same thing with midi port.
They are limited in W2K, and also, once tweaked, it take less resources. I think it's At0mic who got it working with only 6 services! You can't go that far in W2K.
Once tweaked, i use less than 75meg of memory at bootup, included is my SFP background project.
That's lower memory usage than i was ever able to get in WinME!

7 Services, yes. (See CW User Setups in this Tech Forum) It boots with 35MB RAM, 38 with Task Manager
And hopefully soon we'll be able to kick off Internet Explorer and other M$ accessory programs.
[edit] Down to 4 Services now, 32MB used after boot.

Win XP "standard" (not TWEAKED FOR AUDIO) is (in my opinion) the heaviest SO. It has firewalls, automatic updates, system restoration points and other "fisher price" "utilities" that makes it really dangerous for professional audio recording...
If you´ll just install it and use it, go for WIN2K, and get SERVICE PACK 3. Install the OS and then, before installing anything else, install the SP3.
Thats an IMPORTANT actualisation, not only updating drivers but changing important things of the OS.
If you can dive in the SO configuration, and tweak change some things, may be you can install XP.
Win XP let you "eliminate" a lot of things, but W2K does not have installed at all, so it´s more or less the same thing.
Also, win XP has some "hiden" functions that you can´t access. Another innovation of Microsoft is that win XP lets you "eliminate" some apps and services, but then, if you deeply check it, they really still there.
By now, all that we can read and say about XP, is only marketing.
An OS is not really finished until the SP2 appears, thats my experience, and XP has only the first SP done...so by now we are laboratory rats...

I just upgraded to XP Pro. I just needed a harddisk format, so I decided to upgrade to OS as well to start with a real clean sleet. It took me a good part of my weekend to get everything installed, find all the right drivers and tweak the OS so that all those background functions are off, but now it seems really good. It starts fast, hasn't crached yet (not counting the numerous craches I got during the configuring and installing phase, but most of these were my own fault) and it's pretty too.

Hi all!
Well as far as XP PRo concerns, I run it with just 4 services...yes, you are reading correctly ---> 4 services. These are the ones running:
- Windows Audio
- Event Log
- RPC
- Plug'n Play
that's it..together with SFP (about 20 to 25mb) I start up using abouty 54mb of memory....great! I cannot tweak more..I did every other trick in the book! Still Logic isn't up to par with Win9X performance...i think 15% speed decrease. But I can run at 3ms... For daily work on 4ms , just to be on the safe side. Works for me!
