I'm sure this topic has been covered b4, but after searching the forums I couldn't find a satisfying answer.
I just bought me some optical cables to record from my DAT into my daw. What I did is that I added an ADAT A source module and an ADAT A dest module to my project (which is in XTC mode). I connected the source module to the dest module and tried to change settings between slave and master but I don't get any signal from Pulsar saying it's receiving any signal.
When I open up the multimedia setup window of Cubase SX it gives a message saying it is not receiving any digital signal. Please switch to an analog input.
It probably has something to do with the way the modules are connected, but since I've never tried any such connections I do not know how to get this working properly.
At first I want to try record in SX but later switch to Wavelab.
If you connect the adat source to the adat dest, you are sending without any modification the signal from the optical ADAT in, to the optical ADAT out.
Its like getin ONE toslink cable and connectit in the ADAT Machine in the Input and in the Output...
Its like a loop... If you choose input monitoring in the ADAT machine, you should listen to it...
You can (for example) conect the ADAT SOURCE in your project to the ASIO DEST, and then the signal that enters by the optical IN will go to your sequencer (or wathever uses ASIO).
Or may be send it to the Mixer, or any signal processor, or whatever you want.
Let me give you a little advice... read the manuals... if you don´t, youll use only a 10% of your card... Its hard, I know but then, you´ll completely know "what you have"...

I'm well aware of the huge possibilities the Pulsar card has. I use it in many different ways in many different projects. But I never did hook up some optical cables to record directly from my DAT machine. That's what I want to accomplish now. I already looked into the manual but couldn't find anything on how to get this done properly.
I don't know about your DAT, but if Jupiter8 is correct, it's got optical S/P-DIF instead of ADAT. Optical S/P-DIF is a stereo track, as opposed to ADAT containing 8 channels.
-In samplerate View, set to 'S/P-DIF opt' and choose S/P-DIF as optical out type in left lower corner.
-Load an 'S/P-DIF opt Source'.
-Set SampleRate to 'Slave'. Does your card take the DAT's wordclock? It should.
-Play your DAT, and the sound signal should be coming into SFP.
To top things off I now have another problem with the pulsar. I will post a new thread on this since I think it will not be the first time someone gets this error message...
When I connect my optical cable to the out of my DAT machine and connect it to the Pulsar's ADAT B out I get an incoming signal (SP/DIF connected gives a red light). I also set the Pulsar to slave.
Now when I want to check the Asio settings in the multimedia setup box it still gives the same error message (see my "digital error signal" thread in this forum).
I also can't switch to ASIO Scope in Cubase because it gives me the error message "XTC plug not properly installed".
I am very puzzled about this... Any other suggestions?

Now back from the start.
1) Can your Pulsar slave to the DAT?
2) You say it's on optical B. Did you load the S/P-DIF B device? Remember, you can set the optical out settings only for both ports, not individually.
I now do get an incoming signal when I've added an SP/DIF module and connected it to the ASIO dest module.'So it is not the ADAT B module...
But I still get an error message when I want to test the current ASIO configuration.
Somehow I did manage to get Cubase to work again without an incoming digital signal (I removed the SP/DIF module and set the samplerate to Master). I already tried this b4 but then it didn't work. So now I'm at least happy to work normally with Cubase again.
But I still didn't manage to get the digital thing going. Also when I want to check the (new) asio configuration it still gives the same error message (no digital signal is detected)... Very strange because as I said I can work with Cubase again without a digital signal coming in...
Perhaps I should try again when I installed Wavelab (I want to record from DAT into audio).
It's quite possible, yes. AFAIK it's not within S/P-DIF specs, rather an extension or one must be lucky
It worked fine w my sampler. It slaved via elec. S/P-DIF and returned 2xADAT to Pulsar.

Spdif syncs itself. If you only have 2 devices connected together.
If you have more you have to worry about word clock and stuff.
So you should be able to leave Pulsar as master.
On the other hand as the DAT is a mechanical device the Pulsar should sync more easy to the DAT then the otherway around.
But it shuld work anyway.
If you set Pulsar as master, set the DAT machine into Slave, and get a digital signal into its input. Thats the only way to avoid jitter and sync lost.
Your DAT machine does not have any coaxial input/output?
