I m going to get new pc for my pulsarII, since apple just release the new model of G4, they are back in my consideration.
which one should i go for ? (or pc instead ?)
old model 933 has super drive (dvd-r)
new model dual 867 has combo drive cd-rw + dvd rom and DDR ram system
the 933 is about $375 cheaper
thanks for all advice
G4 933mhz vs new dual 867mhz
The new one has higher bus speed,167 instead of 133, and DDR ram so it should be faster even if it has slightly lower CPU freq.
You don't benefit that much from dual processors. The only program i know of that takes full advantage of duals is Digital Performer. (and possibly Bitheadz unity)
Logic and Reason runs all audio on one processor and the rest on the other so you won't get a slower system with higher load.
But still the second processor might be doing next to nothing while the first is working like crazy.

The DDR on the new G4's really utilized as the G4 processor is still stuck on the rather dated single-data-rate 133 bus. But luckily, if you're looking at the low end model, you're not really paying any more for the DDR either... and compared to two weeks ago, you're getting a second processor "free"!
If you're going for pure performance for audio and Creamware, the fastest P4 system will do you much better, and get you out the door for much cheaper (particularly if you build it yourself).
However with a Mac, you would get good performance, would need much less technical abilities (although its still handy to have the motivation to want to tweak a bit, even on a mac!), and the main reason I'd go mac would be because of the ergonomics of the OS. There is supposively something intangible using a mac that makes it easier to get to your creative ideas.
That said, I have a PC, and once mac hardware moves forwards a bit more (I'm waiting for "real" DDR, and maybe a few more CPU speed bumps), I will probably get a mac as well. But as someone very comfortable with the ins and outs of a PC (including building them, etc), I find the ergonomic benefits moot vs. the performance. But yeah, I want a Mac too, then you can run MAX/MSP and Logic.
The other thing for me holding me back from a Mac, is I would only want to run OS X and for audio it's not QUITE there for what I'd want to do (Logic, Pulsar, etc). I don't want to run OS9 just like I don't want to run Win98.
This is just my perspective on the mac vs. pc thing at this time, coming from a PC user. Maybe you find it interesting.

I bet they have something impressive at Apple, there wouldn't have been all the hazzle to get rid of the previous G4s.

cheers, Tom
