cpu speed

my question is this, how fast a processor can i stick into my old mobo, its a GA-6BXE (intel 440 bx agp set)please help...

The fastest chip you can find with a 100mhz bus. You might have to flash your BIOS to the latest version to get all the multiplier options, or you might be forced to change jumpers... not sure, I haven't used Gigabyte boards.

The fastest chip is the 1000mhz chip (10x100), but that may be difficult to find; avoid 133mhz parts, as on the BX, that will put your AGP at 89mhz, out of spec (unless you know what you're doing, have PC133 ram, and have an offical overclocking permit).

850mhz (8.5 x 100) might be your best bet. Avoid chips with "EB" since that means 133mhz FSB.

the 100mhz-fsb/slot1-version of the 1000mhz-p3 is afaik a new stepping with lower voltage. ensure that your board can handle this, before buying that cpu.

exactly, some of these adapters come with an own voltage supplier, so all you have to do is updating your bios.

it should be possible to upgrade almost all bx-boards with coppermines.
