For any of you with 'the crackles' that have read the 'enable DMA' tip and found that they have no DMA box there to check (and giving up there), try installing the software that came with your motherboard that had been sitting at the back of your cupboard, instead of spending the past four months tearing you hair out trying every possible combination of optimisation tips like yours truly!
It won't help you if your motherboard doesn't suupport DMA, but it will if you're ignorant like me and the company you bought the PC from had installed all the drivers and software except the motherboard stuff.
Just thought I'd share this in case there was anyone else in the same position.
Go on Laugh!
Durrr
Just a reminder, if you're using the Intel i815 chipset, and running Windows 9x (and not ME), then you will need to install all the 815 drivers off the CD. If you're running WinME, it has 815 chipset support built in.
If you're running a BX board, you should have support automatically built in to Windows 9x and higher.
If you have an onboard HighPoint Controller, don't use it, and hit it with a hammer if possible
Sorry, just had many many problems with those damn 3rd party poorly-coded drivers. You'll also have to install a driver if you have a Promise controller onboard (or onboard SCSI).
