Hey,
i have a question which currently emerged from my current project,
where i am trying to make some psy-trance (again.. its like 15 years since last take).
I am working on the bass/kick combination, and i notice on newer records, that they
manage to separate the bass-timbre/sound and the sub base with the kick so the bass and kick gets this bouncy sound,
without being incompatible with low-end system (buds, speakers, <add your shitty listening-gear to the list>).
I manage to work out parts of this - bass needs to live rather high up in the freq. field, but what i am not managing - is to make it sound system compatible. So after working with the sub-bass and the mid-bass it ends up sounding great on my monitors and phones.. but my car stereo just sounds weird.. then i tweak it so i can make it sound great in the car stereo.. but guess what.. it sucks in my monitors and phones..
take this for an example..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZO1_lvXwvmM
This tracks has a massive bass sound that rubles on in the lower floor.. but also compatible with any shitty gear i have...
So.. as i mentioned, i have tried to work on the bass in chunks.. so i have a sub-bass and a higher bass.. but i suspecting that i am not controlling the frequencies right on the sub. is there any magical numbers i can work with?
Should i roll off like 60hz?
where should the sub, lowpass? 160hz ?
and.. if i need to fix the room.. don't tell me that.. just tell me there is no hope..

Re: That tight but bouncy bass!!??
yeah roll of somewhere between 30-60hz
make it so it sounds good in the studio, forget about the car.
as far as synthesis sounds like a virus imo, but could even be something cheap like vanguard lol.
actually dont like what they did here personally, vulgar imo, a bit over the top that upper bass layer. original was much nicer.

Re: That tight but bouncy bass!!??
thanks.. i will try..
i like the original too - but as a remix i love the flow they bring in the the track.
Its a bit over the top.. but to be honest its pretty much what they have been sounding like the last 20 years (a bit more loudness today then their dancing galaxy album).. but in general the techniques still apply.
i would hold a button on the virus.. they have been using them since virus a..

Re: That tight but bouncy bass!!??
sidechaining
you use the kick track level to control the compression/volume of the bass track.
Pushing it hard enough you can get that pumping/breathing kind of sound.
You'll have to play with the parameters to find what fits the best
here you can find some info about the technique.
Vinco for example has a sidechain input.
Some of the DAS compressors do as well:
Scope Rise Archives DAS compressors
here is an example of DAS 1610 used in sidechaining
another trick is to make sure that the lower frequencies are mono, which removes weird phase effects (BX Digital had a mono maker for this that was great)
